Need holiday ideas

Going away in the summer, but can't decide where to go. Not a fan of Italy and Greece doesn't really appeal either. I also don't like resort type hotels or holiday parks.
I'd like somewhere warm/hot not too far away flying time from UK as I have a chronic illness which seems to improve in warmer weather.
I'm normally good at knowing where I want to go on holiday, but really struggling this year!
I'm not opposed to holidays in the UK, but everywhere I like going I've been and just not appealing to me right now.

What do you like?
Castles? Flowers? Beaches? Booze? Sun? Elephants?

Newmumma83 · 09/04/2019 19:19

What do you like to do on holiday ... if you want more traditional simply or small and friendly holidays with Thomson are a good starting point or perhaps villa / cottage options but location depends on whether you will drive and what you enjoy doing

I like sightseeing while on holiday or just having something to do. I've tried to do the lying on a beach/by the pool on holiday. I lasted about an hour before needing to find something to stop the boredom.
I've previously done holidays that were just horseriding with a day of sightseeing, holidays where I wander round the area I'm staying in. I think it goes back to holidays with my parents where we did lots of sightseeing and activities while on holiday.

Well I'm currently in Majorca - Puerto Pollensa and it's lovely! Only a short flight from UK (super impressed with Jet 2 by the way) and we're having a really chilled time. Just me and my OH - no itinerary, we just get up each morning and see what we fancy doing. Perfect...

purplecorkheart · 09/04/2019 20:01

Lisbon maybe?

Al2O3 · 09/04/2019 20:08

Yeah, Portugal and do tours around the north. Maybe even a riding holiday in northern spain, near the coast.

Sardinia is pretty great. We stay in the Orosei /Cala Gonone area and it's not very built up which I love. Hotels seem to be quite expensive but you can get little apartments for quite cheap. Easyjet are good value but weekend flights much more expensive.

There's lots of walks in the area I mentioned, a couple of caves (one only accessible by boat), ruins, a gorge in the mountains.

As a whole, it's an Italian island but has it's own distinct culture imo. There's lots of history, ruins of old nuraghic settlements as well as both Greek and Roman ruins.

You really need a car though.

I'd second Majorca. It's a short flight from the UK and there are lots of things to do and see within easy reach of anywhere on the island. Port de Soller is beautiful and Palma is a fab little city.

Mahon, Menorca - boat trip, gorgeous 'city' (town), gin tour, food market etc.

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 09/04/2019 20:12

Malta? Or Madeira?

Al2O3 · 09/04/2019 20:14

Crete is nice. Greek but not Greek. You can go to Spinalonga. And read Victoria Hislop's The Island

Those islands out in the Atlantic too. Can't remember their name. Lots of flowers and steep hills. No sandy beaches, just dark volcanic sand and you jump off concrete patios into the deep see. No lager and no yobs. Just steep hills you can slide down on a tin tray. And donkeys. And a tunnel through the rock paid for by the EU.

fblake · 09/04/2019 20:15

Madeira is really nice - lots to see and do. X

MarthasGinYard · 09/04/2019 20:19

Madeira

Stunning scenery

Lots of cultural sights nice architecture

Scary cliff hanger cable cars to watch or dare

I thought it would be full of Ancients of moo moo but actually no and rather cosmopolitan Smile

Livvylovesgin · 09/04/2019 20:22

Love Croatia! Istria as an area is lovely. Or what about one of the islands off the mainland.

Flights to Pula.

Groovee · 09/04/2019 21:31

Budapest may fit the bill. I have fibromyalgia and felt well despite all the walking etc.

Newmumma83 · 09/04/2019 21:48

Madeira has great scenic lido walks, it also has palace gardens you can walk around and Funchal town is good for a walk

You have beautiful gardens with exotic plants and you can get a sky rail up there

Used to do whaling they talk of that history also at one point they thought Madeira was where the asteroid hit that kled the dinasaurs and caused an ice age ( massive crater )

Croatia has somebeautiful areas too abojt 2 1/2 hours flight so pretty short

Or why not look at going on a lakes holiday ( look up lakes and mountains ) for something a bit different

Lots of lovely ideas. I will have a look at them.
Al2O3 Is it the Azores you're thinking of?

Valencia is a beautiful city. Lots to see and do. There's a park that takes you from one end to the other. This used to be a river but the valencians got fed up with being flooded so diverted it and made it into a great park. There's also churches cathedral , Roman ruins , loved every moment of our visit definately going back at some point. There is a beach not too far out if the city.

Evennow · 10/04/2019 02:18

Krakow, Poland.

Al2O3 · 10/04/2019 10:03

No it’s Madeira as my post crossed with the other. It’s supposed to be lovely especially if you like nature.
