If you've moved abroad as an adult

Inspired by the thread about languages; those of you who've moved overseas as an adult, particularly to somewhere non English speaking, how did that come about? I'm mostly interested in people who've done it without moving with a company (just because there is zero chance of me moving with my job!).

I have a job which would not be transferable other than to an English speaking country, and even then would require retraining so if I moved it would have to be to start a new job. OH and I are mid 30s, child free by choice and having a bit of an early mid life crisis. We lived in Australia for a few years and could go back there, possibly, but I kind of have a hankering for Europe. I have an Irish passport which helps. I'm reassessing my priorities a bit financially and kind of wondering about the accumulation of money and why we do it - yes for housing and living, but beyond that we have no need to fund kids, now or in the future, so maybe I could afford to take a pay cut for the chance to live overseas again. But doing what? So if you've moved overseas, what do you do? How did you make the decision to go? Has it panned out so far?

I do have a CELTA qualification which I guess is always an option but not one at the top of my list. I have French to A level but it's incredibly rusty. I'm thinking about learning another language but not sure where to start.

I guess this is a bit rambly, but hopefully those of you who've been there and done it might pick out what I'm trying to get at!

PS, I name changed because the combination of passport, qualifications and where we used to live could be outing. I realise that's highly unlikely but it certainly would have been with my previous username.
