Should I go back to the doctors for this? Horse kick on hand

Last Monday I was kicked by a horse on my hand. I went to A&E where they x rayed it and told me i'd escaped any breaks (god knows how, it was a big horse and a full impact kick!). They told me it was severe soft tissue trauma but should improve in a couple of days.

The swelling has now gone down and I can move my fingers well enough to type for a short time etc. But I now have a hard lump, about 2 1/2 cms across at the point where my thumb meets my first finger and it is agony. It aches all the time and I can't put any pressure through my hand at all - I can't turn on taps or undo squah bottles as it is excruciating. I picked something up with it earlier and it felt like something shifted in there. I thought it'd be better by now!!

Do I go to the doctors do you think or is it just wasting their time? is there anything I could do to help it improve?

You might need another x Ray, if there was really bad swelling it can be hard to detect a break at first.

Yes definitely get it checked again. Sounds so painful.

Back for another xray.

Breaks can be hidden by the soft tissue damage.

Oh poop. I think you might be right. It's awful. The ache is deep and throbby and when is twists etc its excruciating. Do I go to the docs to arrange another x ray or back to a&e?

You can arrange an x-ray through your GP, I wouldn't go to A&E for it as it's not a new injury and hasn't become drastically worse.

Hope it's better soon.

Have you got a minor injuries unit close by? That’s probably the best place to get it rechecked.

I'd go to A&E, because they've seen it and they have the people around to sort it. Having broken a wrist twice and an elbow once, when I went to the GP a week after breaking my elbow he sent me to A&E.

Yes - that sounds like a scaphoid fracture. They can be quite difficult to see as its a small bone in your hand, but quite important. Soft tissue damage/swelling could hide it from the x-ray.

Good luck!
