My vote is for the Aldi rhubarb and custard ones

M&S apple and cinnamon get my vote too.

RedForShort · 09/04/2019 20:38

None of this new fandangled ways, thank you very much. Custard!!! What horror!!

Keep your perverted talk of chocolate from this thread. There's respectable sorts here.

You tolerate a few cherrys and in the blink of an eye all hell is unleashed. It's a disgrace.

BunnyandBee · 09/04/2019 20:38

@INeedNewShoes the tesco bakery ones are soya free, but I didn't check for palm oil I am afraid was just delighted to find it was soya free the other ones sold in tesco on the shelves all had soya though.

IncrediblySadToo · 09/04/2019 20:43

Ooh a few new ones to try.

For the Traditionalists, I just pretend the others are an entirely different thing - life a cake/crumpet/scone and NOT actually HCB’s —because they’re not—

Jsmith99 · 09/04/2019 20:47

Traditional, simple buns from the local bakery or the supermarket in-store bakery for me, ideally eaten while still warm from the oven. I could happily demolish a whole pack with a pot of tea.

NorrieTheMouse · 09/04/2019 21:01

Thanks for the recipe link @BertrandRussell - will give those a shot. Might also prompt me to have another go at making a sourdough starter Smile

EngagedAgain · 09/04/2019 21:53

Yes, custard is for doughnuts, not hot cross buns!

Thecatisboss · 09/04/2019 22:07

I have sour dough starter already. My plans for the weekend are now sorted!

cwg1 · 09/04/2019 22:13

BUNDAMENTALIST Love it Grin M&S marmalade are going down well here this year - they remind me of Paddington Bear.

catinboots99 · 09/04/2019 23:31

Sour dough starter? Is that like when that cup of jizz was deposited on random doorsteps and people were supposed to make a cake from it?

OP posts:
BertrandRussell · 10/04/2019 07:34

Not a baker then.....

catinboots99 · 10/04/2019 07:56

@BertrandRussell clearly not

Another one for Aldi brioche hot cross buns. I take one to work and toast (then use proper butter) - it makes my mornings 😋

Rockbird · 10/04/2019 08:40

There are only two Aldi on the Isle of Wight. If neither of them have the rhubarb and custard I'm off to the ferry...

I love a traditional HCB but the chocolate ones that Tesco did a few years back were delish.

Moondancer73 · 10/04/2019 09:02

I found the rhubarb ones way too sweet but their extra fruity ones are yummy as are the Tesco extra fruity.

DearTeddyRobinson · 10/04/2019 09:28

What are these abominations with rhubarb and salted caramel?? Bleugh! Traditional buns here please. Sainsbury's TTD are nice.

holly873 · 10/04/2019 09:32

This is very much a debate I want to follow Grin

CharlyAngelic · 10/04/2019 10:46

I am with the BUNDAMENTALIST @downcast eyes
Lovely buns @doje

Have some Tesco Finest ones in the cupboard ...lunchtime mmmm.

downcasteyes · 10/04/2019 11:09

This thread is making me hungry. I'm designating 11am bun o'clock.

Fluffycloudland77 · 10/04/2019 11:11

Iceland own brand buns are palm oil free.

catinboots99 · 10/04/2019 12:01

My mum just raised the game. She toasted one of the Aldi r and c ones and put butter and WENSLEYDALE on it. Pure lushness.

Normal
Ones
Only

Argh

Rockbird · 11/04/2019 16:53

OMG the rhubarb ones are just...just... I will never eat another type of HCB again ever!

Thecatisboss · 13/04/2019 11:32

Thanks for that recipe @BertrandRussell DH is waiting impatiently to try them (DD doesn't like dried fruit and won't try them - I do wonder about her!)

Has anyone ever come across a cinnamon-free hxb? I can't stand the stuff. I guess the answer is to make my own.
