Mental health - does it run in families?

I had a coffee chat the other day with SIL (DB's DW). She was referring to an outburst that her DB had the other day in a public place with my DB where he was out of order and which was resolved. Her DB has been prone to outbursts sometimes and I think (hope) that he's receiving therapy - he's been under a lot of strain for various reasons.

Anyway - during our chat SIL mentioned to me that 'mental health issues run in her family and that there was a history of mental health in her family' but only clarified this by saying that her DM had had a nervous breakdown after her DH (SIL's DF) had a stroke about 15 years ago.

I did mention to her that most people at some point in their lives including me had depression or mental health issues and it was a bit overdramatic to say there was a history of mental health issues/that they run - in her family.

Was I wrong to say that though? I told her we would all support her DB - my DM's old neighbours saw him a few years ago for therapy - as they're therapists but more hypnotherapy and aromatherapy etc but this helped him then.

Yes certain MH conditions might run in families and be related to genetics, I read about it once on the NHS website

Found the link, not quite as black and white as "runs in the family" though
