IPad or tablet

Having just broken the screen on my son's very slow iPad (which was supposed to be mine!) I said I'd get him a new one for his birthday. They seem so much more expensive now. So my question is shall I get an iPad (he's clubbing together his birthday money along with money from us) or just get a tablet? What's the difference and has anyone got any recommendations? Thanks

I thought an ipad was a tablet?

There's Apple ipads of various sizes and Android tablets, so a major consideration would be whether he likes Apple or Android better - most people are pretty set, and wouldn't want the 'wrong' one at all.

Then there's full size or mini - does he have a preference. I think full size are too big. So one way to spend less would be to get a mini size, if that's still suitable.

Then you go onto budget, memory size, colour etc and can start looking for deals. But the comments under the links posted by Palominoo don't inspire confidence.

There seems to be a lot of shady operators for this sort of tech, where you don't get the item at all, or there is no support if something goes wrong and it seems a big risk to take to save a few quid. Therefore, I'd rather buy from an official supplier and see what discounts I can find - sometimes you can get a bit off through Quidco, or pay using discounted gift vouchers paid for via an employee perk for example.

What you get may depend on what it is used for. If it's just for internet browsing and a few games, something less expensive may fit the bill. I have a Kindle Fire for use when on holiday for that reason.

Apple phones and tablets are far more expensive than Androids. I have no idea why they are supposedly so much better.

But they are a bit outdated now, you'd be better off buying a hybrid tablet/laptop.

How old is your son and what does he use it for will influence how much to spend.

My dd is 10 and has had a kindle fire for about 4 years and it does all it needs to for her. She plays roblox, Minecraft, watches videos on YouTube, takes photos and videos. Cost us about £35 during black Friday.

We will likely buy her a new one once she starts secondary school but not Apple as all our tech is android anyway. Samsung do some great tablets.
