Just that really, what one unsolved crime/mystery/news story do toy wish would be solved?

For me, its Madeleine McCann. It may well just be because of the age I am, its one of the first ones I remember really clearly as it happened.

What about you?

I was thinking about this just last week, the lady who was sunbathing and then got murdered in her house. I had to google her name, Ann Heron.

And the awful murder of Marie Wilkes, the pregnant mum who broke down on the motorway, left her kids in the car to get help and ended with her throat slashed.

Roselinemac · 10/04/2019 02:59

Ben Needham, mystery what happened to that little boy. Just closure for his mum really.

scissorlover · 10/04/2019 03:29

Those who mentioned the Dyatlov pass incident, please read the book Dead Mountain. A lot of people believe it solved the mystery

Jon Benet Ramsey: I was never convinced that her family was involved. I still think it will be solved.

About the West Memphis Three:

Terry followed the boys into the woods in a rage, planning on taking his stepson home. He got angry, hit him a bit too hard and killed him. The other 2 boys witnessed it, so he had to kill them too.

Ok, so he killed the one boy by beating him to death and the other two boys just stood there and waited their turn? It doesn't make any sense. They were in an open woodland. Why wouldn't the other two boys just have ran?

Many years ago, I was a member of a True Crime group and a lot of us read through all the evidence and the most convincing theory was that the 3 men convicted were guilty. Three boys, three killers. One of the guys actually confessed to it, several times. Damien, the ring leader, had a long history of disturbing behavior. There are hundreds of pages of his psychiatric reports online. But, you know, people like Johnny Depp were charmed by Damien and championed them as being innocent. Sad

BlackCatSleeping · 10/04/2019 05:25

I believe Ben Needham was killed by accident in the digger accident. I know there is no conclusive evidence to prove this as it was so long ago, but it's a very convincing theory, I think.

LarryGreysonsDoor · 10/04/2019 06:41

I think the problem with some cases, like MM, is that someone could confess and be proven guilty and some people still wouldn’t accept it.
The mystery is far more interesting.

Like the Marie Celeste. I recall that years ago it was shown to be an insurance job. The people who owned it got all the crew off and then damaged it to make it sink, but it didn’t sink. All the stuff about half eaten meals is just embellishments.

Lycanthropology · 10/04/2019 09:24

I'd never heard of Daniel Entwistle either! A 7 year old missing child in the UK, case closed after a few months. Horrific.
Not only does it make me sad, but also angry, the disparity in such cases.

IfOnlyOurEyesSawSouls · 10/04/2019 11:27

Ben Needham - its not a theory , the guy actually confessed.

CatWhisker · 10/04/2019 11:28

Lee Boxell. Local to me growing up and similar age. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disappearance_of_Lee_Boxell

IIRC the chap died and someone else said he'd done it. I don't think anything is conclusive and the case is open again. Happy to be corrected though.

BlackCatSleeping · 10/04/2019 11:44

The case of Brian Shaffer is a mysterious one. He was seen on CCTV entering a bar, but never left. He was never seen again.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disappearance_of_Brian_Shaffer

I do agree that it's heart breaking all the people who have disappeared and no one seems to care. Sad

BlackCatSleeping · 10/04/2019 11:51

With the Ben Needham case, I believe they tested the toy car and sandal they found at the site but the blood on them didn't match Ben. I don't think this is conclusive proof of anything though as it was all a long time ago. His mother thinks that his body may have been placed in an oil drum and removed from the site by the digger. I read that the main suspect confessed on his death bed. It's all circumstantial, but I think it's plausible.

I also believe that Corrie McKeague was in the bin. The mobile phone evidence seems pretty strong.

OK, fair enough. So, where's his body ? The police have spent many many hour sifting many many tons/tonnes of rubbish and also searching the land fill site. So, again, where's his body ? Were there even any clues that he got to the land fill site dead or alive. Despite the discrepancy of the weight of the rubbish truck or it's load, was there any evidence that a human or human body had been in that truck ?

BlackCatSleeping · 10/04/2019 12:10

The landfill site is huge. It's like searching for a needle in a haystack and I think they only started the search many months after he disappeared. The bin would also be extremely dirty and full of rotting food remains and debris and again I think they only found the weight discrepancy quite some time after he disappeared, so not ideal for finding forensic evidence. It's not 100% certain that he is there, but I think it's the most likely explanation.

AlpacaPicnicc · 10/04/2019 12:17

@ToEarlyForDecorations do you know just how vast the landfill site is and how many tonnes of rubbish are deposited there? If you had any inkling I don't think you'd be asking why his body couldn't be found. It's not like sifting through a small skip or something

ToEarlyForDecorations · 10/04/2019 12:22

JonBenet Ramsay - was it Burke? Did her parents finish the job? Was it all over a bowl of pineapple? Was it a complete stranger? Argh!

I've seen several theories. Firstly I believed it was her brother, Burke. He was fed up with JonBenet coming into his bed at night sobbing because of the pressure put on her to perform at those child beauty pageants, as well as her getting the majority of her parents' attention.

I saw a documentary about how it was JonBenet's father. (The one where he sued and got a settlement.) It examined the vocabulary and phrasing of the ransom demand. Also, tellingly, the ransom demand was a sum identical to what he was due for his bonus that year.

It's tragic that JonBenet died. I feel very sorry for her mum who died, she went to her grave not knowing what happened. Unless she did and was part of the cover up.

My intuition would lead me to believe it was done and covered up by family members.

KindnessIsUnderrated · 10/04/2019 12:24

When the bin van was forensically analysed in the CM case, there was none of his DNA in it. Given he was likely to have been crushed by the mechanisms, then it would be reasonable to expect some blood particles.

The phone pings proved that Corrie's phone moved, not him. The bin company also changed the weight of the bin he was supposed to be in a few times.

I don't know what happened, but there are certainly other theories out there.

KindnessIsUnderrated · 10/04/2019 12:27

The search team did find rubbish from the Greggs bin that Corrie was meant to be in, from around the days that Corrie was meant to have been in it. They found nothing.

ToEarlyForDecorations · 10/04/2019 12:27

AlpaccaPicnic - I like your screen name but I'm puzzled by your response. My post said exactly that: the police have spend thousands of hours sifting hundreds of tonnes/tons of rubbish.

So no, you are quite correct, it's not like searching a small skip full of landfill 'fodder.'

I don't think his body is/was anywhere near the landfill site.

Ruth Wilson age 16 - disappeared on Box Hill, Dorking, Surrey. November 1995 in the late afternoon just as dusk was falling.

She had paid for some flowers to be delivered to her step mum. They were to be delivered two days after her disappearance, as Ruth had instructed. Ruth had found out that her mother committed suicide by hanging when Ruth was two years old. Not died of a broken neck due to an accidental fall which is what she had been led to believe.

Notes left by Ruth were found by police next to an empty pill packet and an empty bottle of alcohol under a hedge on Boxhill. So, if she committed suicide. Where's her body ?

There was a rumoured sighting of her at a corner shop on Box Hill a year to the day of her disappearance.
