How did you get fit?

Has anyone got themselves really fit?

have just joined a really nice gym. £30 a month and lovely pool and facilities. The village group if anyone knows it.

Problem is I just wander round not knowing what to do.

I have had sacroiliac pain so been doing Pilates and walking.

Back now much better and I’m stuck to know what to do. I want to get really fit but no idea how to do it?

Can’t afford a personal trainer. Done couch to 10k a few times but always ends with SI pain.

Not sure whether to cancel and do own stuff at home.

Fat and so unfit.

Anyone gone from no fitness to fit. How did you do it?

Kettlebells and google for workouts that you can do in the gym. Do your gym not give you a programme or an induction?

Bottomplasters · 06/04/2019 23:37

They gave me an induction but push for you to get a PT

Couch to 5k. Then gym membership. Had an induction, started going to classes then got a personal trainer.

I lost 3 stone last year. Didn't set foot inside a gym. My main exercise was walking - leave the house and walk fast for 15 minutes and then turn around and come home. Vary your route with time. I also did rosemary conley's video a couple of times a week (there are various levels you can access). I had an exercise bike too, and I would do 20 mins or so at a time whilst watching tv.
As you get fitter, you'll find you want to do a bit more. I started the c25K at one point and got as far as wk 5. Caved then at that point (heat wave and decided I just didn't like running) but I might start up again soon and see how I get on.
I think a lot of people are put off exercising because it just seems too much to manage. So start at your level and gradually you'll find you want to increase what you're up to.

I’ve got from a flabby size 10-12 to a toned 4-6! I’ve reduced calorie intake, go swimming a few times a week and do daily exercises at home (stretching, light weights, squats etc) - it has taken more than a year though.

Started out walking, then joined a gym and got into classes. Pilates to start with, then Zumba and body conditioning. I now do around 8 classes a week including circuit training, combat, pump & attack. Switch it up every now and then so I never get bored.

I find classes much better than the gym, as I get bored in the gym. Where as in my classes you are pushed to your limit and encouraged.

I'm don't think the Village group do these classes, or didn't when I was a member a few years ago. But I do body combat, Grit, Core and Pilates. I started just by walking and then increased my pace, running not great for my knees, so a good fast pace walk for my cardio fitness.

Swimming is a great form of exercise it tones everywhere and as you are weightless so less strain on your joints.
Have you tried badminton or tennis if they may be more your thing ?

Wonder how many lengths of swimming to make a difference?

OP posts:
Tigger001 · 07/04/2019 00:17

I think if you started with however many lengths you are comfortable with for a week or so and the push on to an extra 2 lengths, then again an extra 2 and so on it will soon start to make a difference.

And now the weather will be cheering up a bit and if it is reasonable to do so, if you put your headphones on and walked to the gym from home it would also make a difference

I swim 4x a week. I swim before work and swim for half an hour or 1km. Front crawl is fab for your arms. I do yogawithadriene videos off youtube as well but try and fit in a walk on those days as well.
