Feel awful- any ideas what it could be?

I woke up yesterday with really uncomfortable feeling in upper abdomen. I ate something small and seemed to feel better so went in to work. By midday i felt rotten and uncomfortable feeling became pain coming in waves plus nausea so went home. I rested a bit and it seemed to get a bit better. Couldn't eat much but eating a little helped. Went to sleep ok but I woke up a couple of hours later at 1am and the pain was really bad, really intense at times. This went on until 5am when it eased off a bit and i could sleep a bit. Now it's coming and going - not as bad as in the night but still there.
Bowel movements fine, no vomiting but some nausea, no fever, pain is only in upper abdomen.
I plan to phone ooh if it's not better by later today but it's baffling me what it could possibly be. Usually i have a vague idea what might be wrong but this time i have no clue!!
Any ideas? I know diagnosis over.imternet can be dangerous but have my.plan for being seen if needed (and from what I've read online it's not emergency) just asking here for some clues as to what's causing this. Thanks!

Gallbladder?

GreatDuckCookery · 06/04/2019 10:50

Gallstones
Hpylori
Indigestion
Random bug

Does it ease when you eat?

I’m googling myself at the moment with something similar and my Dad also has similar.

I woke with right sided pain in the night on Wednesday and struggled to get back to sleep. On Thursday, I totally lost my appetite (not like me at all), nausea coming in waves also dizziness, loose stools started and abdominal bloating.

My Dad was up in the night on Thursday with severe upper right sided abdominal pain for a few hours.

Yesterday I struggled into work, with an aching pain in the upper right side (just under ribs, same place as Dad). Had several loose bowel movements, was sweating a lot, nausea and dizziness coming in waves, loss of appetite still, feeling generally rotten. Got home and my Mum told me about Dad having similar symptoms. I’ve not been in contact with him until after the symptoms started with both of us.

Last night I woke again with the pain at 4am and got back to sleep at 7am. Haven’t eaten yet but feel nauseous.

No idea what it is either! Dr Google suggests gallbladder but I’m not sure.

Thanks for the thoughts!

I couldn't place it on the right hand side to be honest, i'm not sure if it's gall bladder although i guess it might be.
I thought a bug but the pain is really severe when it comes. I have some coedine left over and have been taking that in the night and it was still bad.
My first thought was heartburn/indigestion. When I was pregnant, i had severe stomach pains which proved to be heartburn. But i was drinking down gaviscon to no effect.
Eating a bit does seem to help a little. Hunger pangs make the pain much worse.

You haven't been taking any anti-inflammatories have you? I had pain as you describe from taking naproxen without lansoprazole and began to wonder if I'd got a stomach ulcer or something. I cut out all tablets for a few days and eventually it went.

Capara · 06/04/2019 11:14

No. I took neurofen for the pain as well when the paracetamol didn't touch it but not beforehand.

I had this once and it was a (horrible) virus. Unrelated scan months later showed no gallballer problems which I was half expecting.

Capara · 06/04/2019 11:22

@Jenniferyellowcat

How long did it last? DH is going away on Tuesday and I need to function!

It was a couple of days at least. How long have you had yours? It really was horrible. I thought there was something really wrong with me. It started on my 40th birthday to boot!

But if it goes on do get a scan referral as it did put my mind at rest. And try mint tea. It weirdly does usually help anything stomachy I have at least a little!

GreatDuckCookery · 06/04/2019 11:35

If it continues ask your GP to rest for Hpylori. I’ve had it and had symptoms like yours OP.

stayclosetoyourself · 06/04/2019 11:35

Avoid nurofen as it is an irritant to the stomach

Capara · 07/04/2019 09:49

In case of interest, I saw nurse at walk in clinic as the pain continued and it's most likely gastritis. They've given me some other medicine to control the acid since the gaviscon wasn't working and I need to make sure I have a little food in my stomach. It seems to be working. I did wake up at 4 this morning with bad stomach pains but I took some pain killers and it passed more quickly than the previous night.

Honestly never realised that it could be this painful but at least the new meds seem to be working.

Thanks for all your input yesterday!

@Capara thanks for the update, glad the medicine is working!

Yesterday I was a little better and managed to eat quite a lot and I thought I was over the worst but I’ve woke up today in a lot of pain in the side again and feeling really drained.

Do you mind me asking what medicine you were put on please and if it’s something that’s available over the counter?

Capara · 07/04/2019 11:00

@EleanorOalike
It's pantoprazole

I don't know if its otc. I had a prescription and also not living in uk (way more restrictive about medications where i live).

Good luck- i hope you get some relief. I've been quite shocked at just how painful and debilitating this episdoe has been.

Thanks @capara I’ve got some from an old prescription!

Good luck with the recovery x

Sounds very like what I had last week with loose stools, but only for two days. It's a common symptom of gastroenteritis, there could be a bug going around.
