41 and 28 years but started overpaying last year so aiming to pay off by 55

Fireinthegrate · 05/04/2019 22:04

We’re 52 and have just paid it off. Feel so relieved. For the last 14 years we have been paying double what we needed to. It’s been worth it.

Ohyesiam · 05/04/2019 22:08

52 and 12 years left

When you pay your mortgage off what happens?

Do you just get a letter from the mortgage lender saying it’s paid?

MrsWicket · 05/04/2019 22:39

ANiceLuxury - we had an endowment that (thankfully) paid our outstanding mortgage off by a whisker. Money appeared in bank account and DH got a bankers draft and took it to the building society to pay it off. Very underwhelming, no fanfare whatsoever when you’ve spent 25 years paying the bloody thing off. Letter in the post confirming, and that was that.

Thankssomuch · 05/04/2019 22:43

I’m 50 this year and have two more years to go on my house (which I let). But then DH and I have another mortgage free place, and then the mortgage on the house we live in together has a few years’ to go.

CoraCoo · 05/04/2019 22:44

32 years old and 21 years on mortgage... but planning to move and increase to 35 years to afford the house we want eek.

Beansandcoffee · 05/04/2019 22:46

It was 5 years. But then I got divorced and now have 12 years and I’m 54. Hoping to pay it off early.

converseandjeans · 05/04/2019 22:56

46 and DH is 49. We have 4 more years of endowment then that will pay a chunk off leaving us with about 70k to pay off over 7 more years. So total of 11 years left.

HolyMerlot · 05/04/2019 23:06

25 years old and 13 years left. Hoping to pay off a little earlier though, we started our first over payments last month. I never take for granted how lucky we are 🤞🏼

DramaAlpaca · 05/04/2019 23:22

I'm 54 & there's just over a year left on the mortgage. Can't wait!

Cahu58 · 05/04/2019 23:23

Mortgage free since 44 due to divorce settlement, would have struggled to pay a mortgage as a single parent otherwise.

MsAwesomeDragon · 05/04/2019 23:28

I'm 39, DH is 49. We've got 15 years left on the mortgage as it stands.

DH is due to get an inheritance from his uncle who died recently, and that will pay off a decent chunk next time we remortgage (I think this will be October when our fixed rate runs out). We're planning on continuing to pay the same amount and reduce the term, so we can then start thinking about savings for retirement/uni costs/helping DC with deposits.

MollyYouInDangerGirl · 05/04/2019 23:29

I'm 25 and we have 34 years left on ours... Grin

Good thing about buying a house in my early 20s is that at least I'll theoretically have it paid off when I'm 59.

Although this is most definitely not our forever home so we'll be increasing the mortgage at some point...

Aimily · 05/04/2019 23:31

28 years old, 31 years at the end of October.

Dowser · 05/04/2019 23:37

Was paid off aged 52 and am 67 now

BrokenWing · 05/04/2019 23:53

mortgage was paid off at 46. I am 50 now. Huge relief to have it finished as my job of 6 years isn't as secure now, lots of roles going offshore and I feel less confident about finding another job earning a reasonable wage if this one goes. Now I am in my 50s I wouldn't want to have the worry of a mortgage hanging over me later than my mid 50's.

If I can manage to work another 10 years, get ds(15) through his education and securely launched, continue saving what was the mortgage payments we might be able to scrape by until retirement at 67.

torthecatlady · 05/04/2019 23:54

I'm 28, dh is almost 30. 21 years left of a 25 year mortgage.

But definitely looking to pay it off much sooner. Currently focusing on small home improvements at the moment.

The dream is to be mortgage free as soon as pos.

stellarparallax · 06/04/2019 00:05

54 and paying around a grand a month. The mortgage runs until I’m 70, in theory, but we overpay as much as we’re allowed to and once we’re out of the fixed term penalty period, we plan to pay off most of it, using a combination of my savings and the lump sum partner brought to the relationship on moving in with me. So hopefully we’ll be mortgage free in a couple of years.

Adversecamber22 · 06/04/2019 02:44

We paid ours off when in our late thirties, we had a year when our investments did really well. We bought just before house prices went up. I know we were extremely lucky

HarrietM87 · 06/04/2019 03:18

We’re 32 with 24 years left. Overpaying a little bit but have a baby so big childcare fees atm, and planning more. Hope to overpay more later once child(ren) in school and the childcare bill has reduced.

ChangingStates · 06/04/2019 03:53

Jealous of those of you have paid off or near it. I am mid forties and will have my mortgage until I'm 70- Joys if having to start again after divorce and in with London prices. However plan is to wait until the kids are old enough to move out then sell up & downsize with a smaller mortgage.

pollywollydoodler · 06/04/2019 03:56

Paid off by 45

sam221 · 06/04/2019 04:30

Paid mine off at 35, which was a couple of years ago-on a single income. Only small handful of people are aware and I tend not to mention it ever to others as there is no need.

skippy67 · 06/04/2019 07:19

51 and have 1 year left on ours.
