We have 15 years left and are 40

We moved July last year, so started again with a new 25 years. We were 40 and 45 at the time.

We do have inheritance money to come which will likely mean mortgage is paid off sooner so not overly worried and we intend to gradually reduce the term with each re-mortgage as we can afford it.

We wanted to keep the repayments low for the next few years as we have a years mat leave then 4 years of nursery to fund. By the time we remortgage those commitments will have stopped so can afford to pay more each month.

I'm 42 & my mortgage term lasts until I'm 75 lol!!

Notmyusualusername0 · 05/04/2019 17:15

26, 29 years left but I’m assuming we’ll have moved long before that.

I'm 36 and have 23 years left. We borrowed money against our mortgage

Seedlip · 05/04/2019 17:23

I'm 46 and the mortgage was paid off two years ago. We don't have flashy cars but do go on long haul holidays two or three times a year.

I've only told two friends, who I know are also mortgage free, as part of conversations about buying another property in the area. Don't plan on sharing further.

PortiaCastis · 05/04/2019 17:28

38 and nothing as I had inheritance from my Father, rather have 20 years to pay off and have my Dad back though

cloudymelonade · 05/04/2019 17:28

25 and DH is 35, we have 10 years left :)

MonaChopsis · 05/04/2019 17:36

46, hope to pay it off within 4 years, will definitely pay it off within 9.

AfterTrentham · 05/04/2019 17:45

I'm 32 and I have 19 years left. I'm looking forward to being mortgage-free at 51, or a bit sooner if we manage to overpay!

applesarerroundandshiny · 05/04/2019 17:58

I'm 55 - we paid ours off a couple of years ago and are now putting the extra savings into our pensions !

bibliomania · 05/04/2019 18:36

45 and another 18.5 years to run. Buying on my own as a single parent and it's not easy when it's all on you.

EssexGurl · 05/04/2019 18:43

Me late 40s and DH early 50s. We got our mortgage deeds this week as we’ve just paid it off!!

We are both very boring and always overpaid. So part of any bonuses went towards it, but we then kept the monthly repayment the same. Mortgage let us pay off unlimited amounts each year.

We have now started paying the monthly repayment into a savings account instead. We also have an endowment on previous house that will pay off in about 3 years.

Been here for 15 years, so had 10 years left.

But as I say, we are boring.

EssexGurl · 05/04/2019 18:44

Oh, and no one knows. No one needs to. Don’t discuss money with friends or family. Even though Lloyd’s are encouraging us all to!

longearedbat · 05/04/2019 18:52

Paid ours off 15 years ago when I was 49 (oh 50). I had been paying a mortgage for 25 years, despite having moved/bought several times, and then bought with my partner. (It was just coincidental that all those different mortgages added up to 25 years). I remember buying my first one bed flat and looking 25 years ahead, and finding it unimaginable. But then, somehow, in a flash, you are there.

NobodysDogsbody · 05/04/2019 19:06

38 22 years.

I agree money and mortgages are best not discussed.

ElektraUnchained · 05/04/2019 19:06

29 and 18 years left. Intend to overpay and bring term down. Will probably upgrade to a better area at some point so may borrow more.

Onemorefortheroad · 05/04/2019 19:07

33 - 25 years but hoping to start overpaying a little next year once we have some extra cash!

Didyeeaye · 05/04/2019 19:10

I'm 29 and have 23 years left. Only got one 2 years ago and that was over 25 years. My friend is also 29 and only has 16 years as he took a 20 year one out at 25.

Nanalisa60 · 05/04/2019 19:13

Paid it off at 50 was so happy when we paid the last payment!! It was such a weight off our shoulders.

IMissGin · 05/04/2019 19:13

I’m 32, we have 21 years left. Although if all things stay as they are we may do it in 10. I’m aware we may not be that fortunate though.

I'm 34 and we've got 26 years left. Plan to bring it down quite a bit once we're not paying the same again in childcare fees in a couple of years!

Singlenotsingle · 05/04/2019 19:48

67 and with a small interest only mortgage, due to finish in 8 years time. However we rent out the annex, which earns more than the mortgage costs. We like to enjoy ourselves rather than shovelling all our spare cash into the mortgage.

Decormad38 · 05/04/2019 19:51

Seeing as the average age to pay off the mortgage is 55 I think this thread is over represented by those who are more than happy to say they have paid it off.

MrsWicket · 05/04/2019 19:54

I’m 52 and we paid our mortgage off 3 years ago. The last 15 years were a killer, as we moved and decided not to extend. Worth every minute of living in my overdraft now Grin
