When did you last blancmange?

There was a pudding served where I work which somebody described as "blancmange". 2 of my work-chums asked "what's that?". They had never experienced the cold wobbliness of blancmange. Shock

When was the last time you partook of a little blancmange?

Is blancmanging dying out?

Not since the 70s thank god.

I don't know if it was the way my mother made it, but I didn't like the texture (I feel the same about crème caramel too).

Hated blancmange day at school Angry

But mum did make a jelly/evaporated milk thing that I loved- basically just jelly chopped up with evap. That was yum.

Shodan · 04/04/2019 23:49

Butterscotch or chocolate Angel Delight though, served all posh with crumbled ginger nuts mixed with melted butter on the bottom (kinda like a cheesecake base). I could eat that right now.

MargotLovedTom1 · 04/04/2019 23:53

Never liked it, but that mutant alien/ skinned rabbit... thing in the photos would be enough to put me off anyway!

TyneTeas · 05/04/2019 00:20

Angel Delight was not blancmange!

HeathRobinson · 05/04/2019 00:30

Pink blancmange! Takes me right back.

Texel · 05/04/2019 00:56

Never had it before (or heard of it until now!) I've never had angel delight either, am I massively missing out?

MadisonAvenue · 05/04/2019 01:02

I haven’t eaten it since the early 70s and never want to eat it ever again.

HeathRobinson · 05/04/2019 01:05

Texel - you're certainly missing out on Angel Delight, esp butterscotch!

Rottencooking · 05/04/2019 02:26

I know how it's pronounced but can't help reading it as blankmangy in my head!

DrBuckles · 05/04/2019 11:59

Texel definitely get a packet of angel delight- it’s only about 50p so not a lot to lose if you don’t like it (get butterscotch, it’s the best one).

Don’t get the ready made pots though- they are horrid.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 05/04/2019 12:43

Loving the myxomatosis styley eyes on that rabbit.

Joebloggswazere · 05/04/2019 12:48

OMG I thought I was the only child to have a blancmange rabbit with lime jelly!!! My heart skipped when I saw those photos, massive nostalgic feels 🥰

AdaColeman · 05/04/2019 12:52

Last seen in 1977, blancmange was my Ex mother-in-law's signature dish!

HebeMumsnet · 05/04/2019 12:59

Oh lord. Not had blancmange since school. I hated it then and now I just think it looks like a placenta. Not that my placentas were mouse-shaped and surrounded by jelly grass, as pictured above, but there was definitely something placentaesque about school blancmange.

ApplesinmyPocket · 05/04/2019 13:11

I went through a recent phase of making (Pearce Duff) blancmange every week to use up spare whole milk.

Those who speak of the gorgeous stuff in disparaging terms - it's just a flavoured, set custard, non? what could possibly be so horrid about it? Confused

For chocaholic DH, to either the vanilla or chocolate packets I'd stir in squares of rich dark chocolate while the custard was still warm - beat till smooth - this sets all silky and chocolatey like a Portuguese Chocolate Pudding - and as a warm chocolate custard, it was so irresistible I blame it for my putting on about 10lb over the winter!

I liked the raspberry and strawberry varieties too. I've got a few boxes in my 'Brexit bag' but I've had to stop making it for now or I'll need a whole new (larger) wardrobe for the summer.

Pavlova31 · 05/04/2019 13:34

I love it. Always have a pack of Pearce Duff in my pantry.Strawberry,Chocolate and Vanilla flavours are my favouritesWinkAlso quite liked the Peach version when that was availableGrin

Pavlova31 · 05/04/2019 13:38

That sounds gorgeous Applesinmypocket will be giving that a try. Actually I have some coffee chocolate in so might try for a Mocha optionSmile

DIZZYTIGGER87 · 05/04/2019 13:40

I made some for DH and DS on Tuesday. I can't stand it personally 🤮

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 05/04/2019 15:31

Not the pink or other pallid varieties, but I still make chocolate blancmange sometimes. Dh loves it - pref. with cream.
My mother used to serve it warm and call it chocolate pudding.

Most kids love it.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 05/04/2019 15:53

We don't make blancmange but we do make milky jelly at least once a week. Or yoghurt jelly.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 05/04/2019 15:55

And I use my rabbit mould

GimmeChocolateNow · 05/04/2019 15:56

Dad made some from scratch a couple of weeks ago. He loves it.

labazsisgoingmad · 05/04/2019 16:26

cantfindname · 05/04/2019 18:09

And now I want need blancmange. Thanks guys Grin

EastMidsGPs · 05/04/2019 18:35

Oh my a blast from my childhood. We only had it at birthday parties tho

I am rather alarmed at the pink bunny blancmange pictures up thread, they really do look like hairless, newborn baby rabbits.
