I’ve rented my home for 4 years through a letting agent, I want to move as the house is too expensive and the landlord is extremely poor at repairs. I was accepted into mid market rental scheme but they require a reference. My letting agent has refused to give one until I’ve handed in my notice, which is obviously making it impossible to secure another house. Are letting agents allowed to do this? The funny thing is the letting agent insisted on a reference before I moved in but don’t seem to understand that other landlords expect the same thing.
