Spiders in banana bunches .....

Comps83 · 04/04/2019 08:12

I just opened a new pack of bananas
Every time I do I get nervous about the fact there may be a spider in there

Anyone actually found one ?

Years ago I found a nest attached to one of the bananas . Dread to think what might have happened if I hadn’t noticed it and they’d hatched .

Never.
Found one in a bag of apples once though.

tickingthebox · 04/04/2019 08:22

I also get nervous - never seen one though!

CaptainHammer · 04/04/2019 08:22

Not in bananas yet but I have found quite a few in bunches of grapes before.

Saucery · 04/04/2019 08:23

Never but I don't buy wrapped bananas, in the hope they will have wandered off beforehand. Found a tiny one on some grapes once.

I did work experience in a primary school and I would sort out boxes of fruit for classrooms at playtimes, and there were always huge ones in them.

Also, my Auntie was a manager at a Co op and they had some kind of poisonous tarantula type thing in the bananas. They had to close the shop until it had been dispatched.

I hate spiders

nowshesaturtle · 04/04/2019 09:07

I found a live beetle stalking around in a bag of salad once. The assistant in Morrisons said "well at least you know it's fresh" Hmm.

But seriously, if you're worried, don't buy the bagged ones.

Comps83 · 04/04/2019 09:31

I once half ate a maggot in a pistachio nut. Didnt like them so much after that

Everyone laughs at me for this!! I'm really weird about bananas and spiders, I won't buy bananas in cellophane bags Cos I need to be able to inspect for spiders. If there is any kind of mark on them I bin them. DH did shopping this weekend and he bought the ones in a bag and I haven't dared open them just in case!

Comps83 · 04/04/2019 09:38

I think it’s a pretty rational fear given how likely it is and where these spiders originate from

I bought a packaged salad from Costa that had a live caterpillar in it. Well, it was live until I drowned it in dressing, before I noticed it. I got a £10 voucher out of it though so silver linings and all that.

SneakyGremlins · 04/04/2019 09:39

@cricketmum84 I'm on your side! I only buy loose bananas Blush

Comps83 · 04/04/2019 09:41

When I was at primary school the salad used to be crawling with insects every time. Usually greenfly

hobblingawayslowly · 04/04/2019 09:43

Buy them loose and you won't have that problem.

cricketmum84 · 04/04/2019 10:06

The more of this thread I read the more likely it is that my bag of bananas is going in the bin 😂

I once found a live caterpillar in my raspberries. I took him home and set him free in the garden. Then realised the raspberries had been imported from Morocco and I was probably letting some weird species loose in the UK!!

fourquenelles · 04/04/2019 10:48

Just adds weight to my argument that bananas are the Devil's colon.

WipeYourFeetOnTheRhythmRug · 04/04/2019 10:57

Does anyone remember that horrifying MN thread from years ago about the hollow banana? Gave me the heebie jeebies for months.

nelsonmuntzslingshot · 04/04/2019 11:16

I never buy bagged bananas and hate it when DH does. Terrified I might unleash a humongous monster

Bravelurker · 04/04/2019 11:32

I have hated bananas for years and I can't help but think that the tarantulas found in crates stories may contributed to that.

LordWheresMyShoes · 04/04/2019 11:34

second best reason to reduce plastic condumption by buying loose, not bagged, avoidance of foreign eight legged critters!

HeathRobinson · 04/04/2019 12:28

I've stopped buying bananas...

WeepingWillowWeepingWino · 04/04/2019 12:31

on at least 2 occasions I have bought broccoli that has turned out to be riddled with caterpillars.

Bananas are the fruit of the devil so why any of you are buying them I can't think, you've got bigger problems that the change of a spider jumping out at you WinkGrin

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 04/04/2019 12:31

I've never been so glad that my children detest fruit in all its forms...

aposterhasnoname · 04/04/2019 12:42

I used to work for a banana company, in fourteen years I saw one live spider.

I could give you a long convoluted description of what happens to bananas that means spiders etc are incredibly rare, and any found are virtually always uk varieties that could have got in anywhere from ripening depot to customers home, but it’s boring so I won’t.

Cheesymonster · 04/04/2019 12:57

My friend's mum did, got her picture in the local paper Grin

Wipe I want to know and yet I'm afraid to ask!

Anerak · 04/04/2019 13:01

I get the fear everytime I buy bananas! I also avoid the unloaded crates in the supermarket.
