Holiday weather not looking good

Off to the Algarve for two weeks tomorrow and the weather forecast is pretty shit. Wasn't expecting wall to wall sunshine in April but it's actually looking quite grim; rain most days and 16-18 degrees. Now worried about what we're going to to with the kids in the rain. Bloody hell should have saved the money and stayed here. Pissed off 😡

Disclaimer: (reasonably) lighthearted and aware it's a first world problem.

Anyone had a predicted bad weather holiday that turned out fine? clutches at straws

I booked a sightseeing holiday for Athens for Feb for DD and I. Before we went, it was predicted that it would SNOW for most of the days we were there for.

Happily, it didn't. It was pretty chilly but didn't snow and we saw all the sights we wanted to see and didn't freeze.

Admittedly, we went knowing it was going to be Feb weather and didn't have warm weather expectations. It would be different if we were going to a pool-type holiday as I do want them to be warm.

Are you staying in a nice hotel?

Chewbecca · 03/04/2019 22:41

The forecast is bad isn’t it! I think the key is to have the right clothes, it is no fun feeling cold and to find lots of activities to do. It will still be warmer than here and ok for sitting outside a cafe.

Oh ffs Sad
We had a huge family holiday planned abroad for a relatives big wedding anniversary. Had a house with huge grounds, tree house to sleep in (optional Grin), tennis and badminton courts, pool, outdoor kitchen, the absolute works.
It was a freak occurrence that there were 2 full weeks of monsoon rain.
Luckily the house had a fabulous playroom because there were 7 small children but it was so so disappointing. We ended up going back to the same place 2 years later to make use of the outdoor facilities we missed out on before.
We did actually have a great time the year of the washout but at the time we were upset to miss out on the brilliant things on offer because of the shit weather.
Fingers crossed it’s not as shit as predicted for the entire time, it can change and will possibly warm up and dry up as the time ticks on. Also, it’s just nice to not be at home (little comfort though when you’ve spent a shit tonne of money to travel abroad, you have my sympathy Flowers ).

minipie · 03/04/2019 22:49

Do what I’m doing: obsessively check the forecast on different sites, then when you find one that looks half decent, cling to that and stop checking Grin

(But also pack warm clothes and indoor activities)

I must admit that booking a fortnight in the Algarve at the beginning of April is a tad optimistic, but a couple of weeks of rain is disappointing.

We had a holiday in Majorca that turned out to be very wet. We hired a car and found that we managed to miss a lot of the rain by visiting other parts of the island. We also got to see a lot more of Majorca because of this, and visited some really beautiful areas.

I think if you manage your expectations, take appropriate wet weather gear and games and toys to keep the children amused, and maybe consider exploring further afield you will have a better holiday than you expect.

I hope the weather is better for you.

I'm doing the same as @Minipie and choosing my favourite weather forecast to read, as we're going to Mallorca next week and some say it will be lovely, others a bit iffy... it's still nice to get away though and we'll have a lovely time. Just a problem packing when you don't know what's going to happen...

Drogonssmile · 04/04/2019 08:29

Thanks all. On the way to the airport now. Packed half a ton of various clothes to cover all eventualities! We are in a villa and will hire a car so hopefully have plenty to do. I have chosen my favourite weather forecast and have stopped checking now. What will be will be and at least it is a change of scene!

Have fun Drogonssmile!

TheFairyCaravan · 04/04/2019 09:32

We're in La Palma atm, leaving tonight. All the weather forecasts would have you believe that it's been pouring with rain and cold for the last 12 days. My tan would tell you different.

We've had a few sharp showers lasting about 10 minutes and a couple of cloudy days. The rep told people not to go on a trip yesterday because the BBC weather app said it was going to be horrendous and we had wall to wall sunshine.

It's meant to be raining now but it's not.

I hope you have a lovely holiday

fussychica · 04/04/2019 10:03

Have a great holiday. Official Portuguese weather site for this week is sunshine and showers 16 - 18 degrees.
Hopefully even if it starts bad it will improve by the day as we move towards May I bloody hope so as I'm going post EasterGrin

amusedbush · 04/04/2019 10:15

We went to the Algarve for a week in April 2013 and the weather was utterly shite the entire time. In fact, the highlight of the holiday was a spur of the moment coach trip to Seville, where the sun was splitting the stones Grin

We've got a few days in Paris lined up later this month and the advance forecast is suggesting rain every day Sad

AllTheFunAndGames · 04/04/2019 10:23

To be fair, their version of rain may only last 10 minutes and sunshine again. It also varies depending on area. It's always better to be somewhere on holidays. Smile

underneaththeash · 04/04/2019 11:25

We’re off to Vietnam and they temperature appears to be 8-10 degrees hotter at the moment, compared to the norm. We don’t do heat very well.

Drogonssmile · 04/04/2019 20:41

Thanks all. We're here, the weather was warm enough to eat dinner outside and now it's dark, kids are in bed and I'm in a scorching hot bath with a nice cup of tea! (Don't drink, otherwise it would be wine or a g&t) I think I'll enjoy myself after all! Forecast was 18 today and it felt much warmer. Good luck to those of you also heading off on holiday soon.

sounds perfect - enjoy! I'll let you know how we get on in Majorca :)

Absolutepowercorrupts · 04/04/2019 21:56

Op I've been in the Algarve since Tuesday, I was out sunbathing today, I mean lying on a sun lounger in a swimsuit and it was really hot, the app may say 18 but it's a lot hotter in direct sun. The wind can be a bit cold and nighttimes are chillier.
Hope you have a great time and as you said you're in a different location.
