So I have 15 years in the job. I was in child protection but since having dcs I’m basically a glorified call centre worker. I’ve got to leave the job but I feel like I don’t have any transferable skills. I’m looking for any ideas/inspiration. Ideally I would want to be part time but am open to full time working options... basically I’m desperate!! Help me leave!!

Good luck op. I've seen loads go in to; train driving, ops management, local council jobs like licensing and charitable organizations for dv.

DailyMailSucksWails · 03/04/2019 19:55

I know x-cop now working as paralegal.

zippyswife · 03/04/2019 20:01

Thank you for the ideas. I’ll start looking!

Do you have any qualifications? DP retrained as a teacher after doing school liaison

needsahouseboy · 03/04/2019 20:13

You have a mountain of transferable skills.
Communication skills, IT skills, people management, work well under pressure, able to work in a team and autonomously etc etc

ChillyB · 03/04/2019 20:20

Have a look at the college of policing they have a lot of resources you can access as a serving police officer which will help you including mentoring/coaching through the membership (membership is free) and a suite of professional role profiles which may well help you with identifying your skill set.
You can also look at whether you would be eligible for any recognition of prior learning credits which you could use towards a new qualification.

Fuktifano · 03/04/2019 20:22

What did you do before you joined? Maybe you could do something in public protection? Check out local authority jobs websites. Can you go part time? I left with loads of service due to child care and work as domestic abuse worker. Loads of training provided. Good luck

dangerrabbit · 03/04/2019 20:27

How about work in probation, prisons or a youth offending team?

ArsenicNLace · 03/04/2019 20:42

You have loads of transferable skills! I'm ex Police and ex child protection. I now work as an investigator in another statutory body but it's really flexible working and family friendly.

Sign up to Indeed and they'll come up suggestions. Other things I looked at (and I know ex cops who work in these areas) included Registration officer (births, deaths and marriages) and also Pastoral/safeguarding Officers in schools.

ArsenicNLace · 03/04/2019 20:50

Sorry. Meant to say when looking for jobs I signed up to several job sites and put 'investigator' and 'safeguarding' (although unfortunately you will get a lot of social work suggestions too with that) in my search criteria.

rosenylund · 03/04/2019 21:06

Housing Associations are crying out for skills like yours, housing officers, risk management, community workers etc. I work with loads of ex police in family support, social services and probation. They all have the ability to diffuse difficult situations is something I always admire.

Ploppymoodypants · 03/04/2019 21:11

NHS mental health trust.
social services
Children’s charity or DV charity
Working in some sort of safeguarding capacity.

Northernmum100 · 03/04/2019 21:13

Try the NARPO site, there is a jobs section for ex police officers - things like Interviewer for Office of National Statistics, Analysts etc. Good luck with the career change!

wafflyversatile · 03/04/2019 21:16

HSE inspector? careers.hse.gov.uk/professions/health-and-safety-inspectors/

ilovesooty · 03/04/2019 21:17

I worked in a drug intervention team with a former police officer. He's now a primary school learning mentor. My former police officer friend worked for a charity as a service manager and now does front facing customer service in funeral care.

DailyMailSucksWails · 03/04/2019 21:20

What skills would OP bring to working for an NHS mental health trust? They seem to mostly want clinically trained or administrators, record keeping.

zippyswife · 03/04/2019 21:34

I really appreciate all the suggestions. I’ve been feeling so deflated and this is just what I needed. Really great ideas and great to hear others have left and gone onto good things. Just what I needed to hear!

dailymailsucks as per my original post, I would imagine she could work within the NHS in a safeguarding capacity. Child protection and safeguarding are a massive part within support for mental health

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 03/04/2019 23:04

There's also working for DVSA as a traffic examiner.

WinterIsComing84 · 03/04/2019 23:40

I left the job 2 years ago, following the birth of my daughter. Moved 250 miles away to my favourite UK holiday destination, to raise her by the beach.
I work two days a week in Children's services with the local council. Pay is shite, but my quality of life is a million times better - as is hers.

Good luck! Life on the outside is great Smile

zippyswife · 04/04/2019 08:24

@winteriscoming84 what role do you do within children’s seevices. I don’t really want to be a social worker- are there other suitable roles within. Part time would be me ideal! Well done on your move!

Really appreciate all the suggestions. I have a degree so could retrain to teach. I have thought about that but I have 3 young dc and really would rather a part time role.

I'm a level below social care - early help. So if a family is having difficulties for any reason, they can contact us and we assess what support services are best suited to their needs, and implement that. We have services such as a school nurse, portage, parenting courses, family workers, youth workers etc, and we link in with CAMHS and SALT too.
It's an office based role, with lots of telephone contact and admin processing - suits me fine. No forced overtime, no evenings and no weekends - I leave work at work, come 5pm, which is something that I totally wasn’t used to. And I actually feel that I'm making a positive difference again 👌

zippyswife · 04/04/2019 08:38

Winters that sounds like a perfect role! Did you just find it searching on the job websites?

I was chatting to an ex-policeman yesterday who is now a pest controller (yes he did make the gag about swapping one type of pest control for another).
