If you used to be a police officer what job do you do now?

So I have 15 years in the job. I was in child protection but since having dcs I’m basically a glorified call centre worker. I’ve got to leave the job but I feel like I don’t have any transferable skills. I’m looking for any ideas/inspiration. Ideally I would want to be part time but am open to full time working options... basically I’m desperate!! Help me leave!!

I know a vicar who used to be a police officer, but obviously you'd have to full some pretty specific criteria to make that move Wink

sleepychunky · 04/04/2019 11:24

Ex-police I know have gone into private investigation work, sales & marketing, and someone quite high up in telly!

zippyswife · 04/04/2019 12:44

@EmmaStone do you know how they got into private investigation work?

We’ve had a few ex coppers join our Licensing Team ( local authority). They do stuff to do with licenced premises e.g. alcohol licensing.

WinterIsComing84 · 04/04/2019 13:22

Zippy I only ever searched for jobs on the council’s website, NHS jobs, or the local police force’s civilian vacancies.
I got lucky on the council website, but had interviews and was offered a similar job within the NHS and working on front counter at a police station. I chose the role that sounded most rewarding Smile

Universities might be interested in you for roles such as investigating student misconduct allegations and more generally Student Services.

ExH trained as a 'financial advisor' whilst in his last two years as police officer., The poor lamb felt he didn't get patted on the head enough in the police and wasn't appreciated so took early retirement.(I'm not really as bitter as that makes me sound - just thought he was a bit of a wally for needing constant reassurance from his employers that he was doing a good job - none of us get that!!) he's now earning shed loads getting commission from organising peoples mortgages as well as his very generous police pension. However the people he's arranging mortgages etc for are really appreciative of his help so hes fulfilled his need

zippyswife · 04/04/2019 16:31

@Blobby10 Over the years I’ve considered retraining as a financial advisor. Do you know how he went about it?

OP posts:
Blobby10 · 04/04/2019 16:47

@Zippyswife its all changed since he qualified - at the time I thought it was far too simple a process to enable someone who couldn't manage his own finances in any way to be able to advise others!

He had the guidance of a friend who had done the same thing -I'm sorry but I have no idea how you would go about it now . There were some regulations brought in a few years ago which tightened everything up and made it harder for people to qualify as a FA.

zippyswife · 04/04/2019 16:48

and thanks for all the great ideas- really given me lots of options to explore. I feel more positive about leaving now!

@Blobby thanks- yes that’s what I thought. I might explore it and see!

A girl I was at school with recently left policing & set up as a dog walker & pet sitter & seems to really love it.

ArsenicNLace · 04/04/2019 19:21

zippyswife Re the private investigator roles I found them advertised on Indeed like any other job?

zippyswife · 04/04/2019 20:41

@ArsenicNLace is the actual job title “private investigator?” Did you go straight into that from being a police officer. I’m just a PC- did my TDCs but ended up as a PC just to stay part time in a reporting role as it’s worked well (to date) with having a family. So I don’t have managerial skills.

My friend was social worker in child protection, now works for cafcas. Job is home based. How about cqc / ofsted inspector. Some cqc inspectors home work x

DailyMailSucksWails · 04/04/2019 20:50

I have an old family friend who is just retiring, after being a PI for about 35 yrs. She was a probation officer before that, before that a social worker.

tbh, she would say first & foremost she was a business woman. She had to know all about running her own business to make a success of it.

BlueGoon · 04/04/2019 20:54

We have a few ex Police staff working for us. It's a hate crime charity. Could you consider Victim Support or Victim Liaison with the Courts service?

GetOffTheRoof · 04/04/2019 21:00

Get on to Linked In. It's fascinating to see where so many of my ex colleagues have gone since I jumped ship 4 years ago.

cojmum · 04/04/2019 21:05

Charity here too, we've just employed someone from the police as a Young Carers worker.

Fudgenugget · 04/04/2019 21:11

Someone I know who used to be in the Police now works on London Underground.

Was watching the bailiff programme today...could something like that float your boat?

zippyswife · 04/04/2019 21:21

@Fudge I’m way too much of a wuss these days for any kind of bailiff type role.

I do like the idea of working in victim liaison- I’ve always really enjoyed that aspect of work.

I’d love an ofsted type role- but just had a look. It looks like you need an education background.

I’m really appreciating all these responses. So many good ideas and areas to explore. I’ve kind of got a deadline as my unit are disbanding and if I don’t get myself out of the police I will be thrown back to team... whilst I loved doing that 15 years ago.. I’m now a lot older, 3 young dcs and to be honest the thought of it terrifies me! So it’s the kick I need to leave.

Frightenedbunny · 04/04/2019 21:25

Look at cqc evidential review officer!

zippyswife · 04/04/2019 21:44

Thank you @frightenedbunny
