My dishwasher smells like wet dog

All the 'clean' items that come out reek.

Any idea why or what I could use to do an empty clean out spin with.

It's making me feel sick. Yuck.

when was the last time you cleaned the filter

This is the stuff I use to do a service wash with both my dishwasher and washing machine www.amazon.co.uk/HG-service-engineer-machines-dishwashers/dp/B001OSL8BW/ref=sr_1_15?s=gateway&crid=29PRDTODOCM8T&keywords=dishwasher+cleaner&sprefix=dishwasher%2Caps%2C137&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1554295935&sr=8-15

But do make sure you've cleaned out your dishwasher properly in the first place - the filters etc.

Have you washed a dog in it recently?

Aldi currently has a 2 pack dishwasher cleaner in the middle aisle that's bloody fabulous, £1.99 a pack.
Also recommend Wilko's dishwasher freshener.

As others have suggested..... clean filters and a dishwasher cleaner. Maybe a few hot washes too. I run a hot wash about once every 3 to 4 weeks.

PurpleCrazyHorse · 03/04/2019 16:10

I do a monthly maintenance wash with a Finish dishwasher cleaner thingy in it. It has a special cycle but any hot cycle will do. I clean out the filter too (you can pull out the main bit that catches the big stuff but it has a second part to it that lifts out that's a fine gauze). Wash the whole lot and I tend to flush some hot water down the filter drain.

I get our dishwasher cleaner on an Amazon subscription, it's a little reminder to do it then.

I use the Wilko’s ones too, not seen the Aldi ones but their stuffs all buav approved now.

@BreakfastAtSquiffanys I thought exactly the same!!!

OVAgroundWOMBlingfree · 03/04/2019 19:01

Clean out the filter. Soak the parts in vinegar.
Put a hot wash on and chuck in a load of vinegar.

Do a hot wash with vinegar once a fortnight.

mclaleli · 03/04/2019 19:09

Could it be egg?

DH made the mistake once of putting the jug I used to whisk eggs straight into the dishwasher without rinsing it Envy < no envy here!

Dishwasher was stinking for about a week after that!

Mine smells like the sea.

Fluffycloudland77 · 04/04/2019 07:28

Amazon sell metal dw fresheners, no refills needed and they get good reviews.

CutesyUserName · 04/04/2019 09:26

I know the smell you mean. Not everyone can seem to smell it (my daughter can't but DH, DS and me can). It's eggs. Anytime I cook eggs, I run a rinse first then the longest cycle or wash stuff by hand and then dishwash them. It's the only way I've found to stop that smell tainting everything else.

I put a few drops (OK, a lot) of lemon oil in mine when it's just finished. Open the door, pull out the bottom drawer and flick some onto the base of the dishwasher. Replace the drawer and put some more oil on the inside of the door. Close the door for a few minutes to let the heat evaporate the oil then open it to let the dishes dry out.

It keeps the dishwasher fresh and makes the kitchen smell lovely. I love the smell of lemon oil. Bonus: it's cheap.
