The sex of a pepper

I was astounded today when in the supermarket with DS. I needed a bell pepper for something I'm making tomorrow, and grabbed the largest and least manky looking specimen from the box. DS then took it off me and swapped it for a smaller one, saying it was a female pepper and would be sweeter.

Apparently, you can determine the sex of a pepper by its shallow - if it has three sides, it's female, if it has four sides, it's male.

Am I the only person who didn't know this??

I count the bumps on the bottom, 3 for female and 4 for male.

This is incorrect. Peppers dont come as wholly male or female, they're both as they self pollinate. They also come in many shapes and sizes and the sides have no bearing on the flavour of the pepper.

We eat a lot of peppers, I therefore cut and prepare them on a regular basis. I had never noticed that they had different numbers of lobes - my smugness at my powers of observation has taken a big hit tonight !

Well I've definitely cut peppers open to find mini peppers inside. I'm now very conflicted as to whether this is a nice thing (ooh, baby peppers) or a not very nice thing (oh no! I've killed the baby pepper ).
