Are go pro’s worth it?

Does anyone have a go pro and are they worth it?

How good are they for photos too?

Depends what you want to use them for as to whether they are worth it, what do you plan on using it for?

I use mine purely for videos (filming sheep) outside in quite wet conditions, often dropped, which a normal dlsr wouldn't really hack! So for me it's worth it. If its just for taking standard photos you could pribably get a cheaper better alternative.

We use ours for surfing videos - is awesome

ShellieEllie · 02/04/2019 19:21

We got one for filming when skiing but it was awful, really not worth it.

Thisnamechanger · 02/04/2019 19:22

Texel why are you filming sheep?

CollaterlieSistersSister · 02/04/2019 19:30

We’ve used ours skiing loads & it’s been ace. Very easy to use, one click (or shout!) to start recording, and the app works well too. You get high quality stills from the video footage, but photo capability seems ok (haven’t used it for that much - it’s more suited to action clips, press go & then...well, go.)

We’ve got hero 5 black (I think).

Texel why are you filming sheep?
My own! I'm not just creeping into other people's fields Grin. I've strapped a go pro on to them before but mostly I just film them. Get clips of them just generally mooching about but also getting fed, sheared, vaccinations etc just sheep life! and the clips get used in educational videos for children in another country. Possibly the most random side job ever!

I bought one recently as an early birthday present for my adult daughter. She loves it. She got a pet harness and if my daughter comes out on a dog walk with me, the dogs take turns wearing the go pro!

GoPro HERO7 Black 4K Action Camera

That's the model I bought and my daughter then bought a kit from Amazon that include a case and a pet harness and lots of other bits.

Palominoo · 02/04/2019 19:36

Forgot to say, I bought it from seeing a good price on HUKD.

RedCrab · 02/04/2019 19:38

I guess it depends what you need it for. They’re designed for capturing activity - very active activity. My DH has one for his work. He’s self employed - think personal trainer but with a niche take. He does loads of videos on his of his classes and solo activities.

For normal camera needs, there’s loads f other cameras that might suit. Including go pro style cameras without the brand. My five year old even has one - it was £30 and is essentially a go pro in every way except reduced picture quality. But straps on everything, water proof case etc.

Thanks all.

It’s to take on days out and uk holidays with DC. I thought it would be better than a mobile phone and not as heavy as dslr

Thought it would be nice and compact to take photos with?

Would it be suitable for that kind of thing?

This is what it looks like on one of my dogs if anyone is interested!

The new ones have amazing motion smoothing eg for filming mountain biking.

They are expensive, but produce essentially broadcast quality film. If you are going to film interesting things and edit well, yes they are worth it.

If you just want to film a few home style clips in outdoor environment, there are cheaper and perfectly adequate alternatives.

Shopperami · 03/04/2019 13:26

Blue skies what are the different alternatives to days out and holidays etc with the family?
