Do you have a cauliflower perm?

If so how old are you? How old were you when you got it? Is it something that happens to everyone? Will I reach a certain age and automatically adopt one? Or will cauliflower perms die out with this generation of older ladies?

Sat in my local Wetherspoons and am surrounded by white cauli perms. Just wondering the average age. I reckon some must be only late fifties/early sixties.

Well I’m 66 and I have a blonde highlighted layered bob. 😂. My spellcheck just changed that to nob. I certainly don’t have one of those! I’m not intending to have a cauliflower perm at any time soon, or ever for that matter. OP, I think your age assessment is way off. I only ever see these on 80 year olds and upwards.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 02/04/2019 23:18

My granny had a cauliflower perm for years. I’d rather chop my head off than have one. But my hair is very thick and my mum’s hair is too, in her 70s, so maybe we will evade Marcel’s Coiffure de Choufleur.

Patagonian · 02/04/2019 23:26

I think the cauliflower perm might die out, tbh.

We can but hope Grin.

DMIL (82) has one, it looks fecking awful. I'm going 'Helen Mirren' when the time comes.

GummyGoddess · 02/04/2019 23:35

I think the short blonde graduated bob is the new perm. Almost all the women that I know who are 60+ seem to have one! My dm has a blonde one, all her friends have blonde ones, work colleagues have blonde ones. I assume because blonde makes the grey hair less noticeable?

PutYourShirtOnMartin · 02/04/2019 23:37

I am 50+ and this is my hairstyle but blonde/ grey

Do you have a cauliflower perm?

Re. the Queen:

Word has it she wears a wig...

Hazeintheclouds · 02/04/2019 23:41

I know the expression to be cauliflower head!

Pavlova31 · 02/04/2019 23:42

When I get older I would like the Helen Mirren look or styled in a bun if long enough.

Pavlova31 · 02/04/2019 23:44

No cauliflower perm or blue / mauve rinse either for me 🙂

Fudgenugget · 02/04/2019 23:47

DM has a blunt cut bob (not flattering. No amount of coercion will persuade her to soften it up) and DMiL has a Number 3 all over. DMiL is considering green or purple dye on her short grey hair. I think she'd look great!

catinboots99 · 03/04/2019 07:46

@kalinkafoxtrot45

Coiffure de Choufleur

I'm dead GrinGrin

MIL 81 has had that hairstyle for as long as I've known her - 33 years

Drogosnextwife · 03/04/2019 07:53

I dread getting older because of my hair. It's already thin, I doubt it's getting any better with age. I will probably have no hair left so won't need to worry about a style, I'll have bigger problems.

Dowser · 03/04/2019 07:54

I am 67 and no cauliflower perm either.
My hair is longish, still lots of brown in it, tinged with bits of grey and blonde streaks
I wear it down if it’s not windy or tied in a ponytail with a little bow threaded through the pony tail fastener.
I don’t like a bare naked ponytail
Oh and I have a fringe as well
I get my hair highlighted every 6-8 weeks and it’s in good condition

thenewaveragebear1983 · 03/04/2019 07:58

short back and sides and curly on top'
Also known as the 'meet me at mcdonalds'!

What, do this abomination has a name?? I assumed that it was for the naturally curly only!

I am invigilating a 3.5hr exam at a secondary today so in order to fill the time I might carry out some kind of data collection and report back.

swampytiggaa · 03/04/2019 07:58

My mom is nearly 90 and has pretty much always had this style. HOWEVER she has rampantly curly thick coarse hair even now so it’s not a perm it’s just the style her hair naturally goes into.

She’s always had very short hair as it’s unmanageable when it has any length to it.

swampytiggaa · 03/04/2019 07:59

Oh and my boychild has meet me at macdonalds hair bless him... he’s got my moms hair!

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 03/04/2019 08:05

I’ve just bought a lilac rinse. I’m looking forward to my greys being a soft violet.

So l guess in my mid 50’s I’ll have purple hair👍🏻And it’s long and straight.

IJustLostTheGame · 03/04/2019 08:09

I bet I'll be tottering around with my walking stick with The Rachel in 30 years.
It's going to be the classic 'granny cut'

BarkandCheese · 03/04/2019 08:14

When I picture a cauliflower perm I picture my grandma and her friends. They all wore variations on a white cardi, floral zip through polyester dress, support stockings and slip on shoes, accessorised with the kind of snap closing black hand bag which could double as a cosh in emergencies. Said bag also always contained a plastic rain hood to protect the hair in the wet. I don’t think anyone under 85 looks like that anymore (my grandma did from her 50s).

goodiegoodieyumyum · 03/04/2019 08:14

What the hell is a cauliflower perm?

AuntieStella · 03/04/2019 08:16

"I can't believe that there aren't any cauli heads on MN. Maybe I should ask over on Gransnet"

Only if you want your arse handed back to you for lazy stereotyping.

Yes, some people decide on their personal style at some stage in their life and then stick to it.

Does that actually matter?

Especially as elements return to fashion - blue rinses are terribly popular right now. Something which a couple of years ago you might have decried in ageist terms as you'd just seen some people at the older end of working age (60-70) in a pub blue-ish/purple hair.

Evennow · 03/04/2019 08:24

Cauliflower perm not a style for me, nor will it ever be (am in my late 60s). I am currently sporting what Palominoo describes as the 'short and hacked' look. Each to his/her/their own! I have wavy hair which goes naturally into florets which I don't like at all.

MitziK · 03/04/2019 08:29

My mother was arguing with hairdressers from about 1984 that she wanted a tight cauli perm and they said it wasn't a good idea. She had it done in about 1978 - I was 5 and I hated it. (she fell for the stupid idea that at 40, you have to cut all your hair off). The sound of her frizzing it with an afro comb permeated my childhood memories.

Horrible, harsh style.

Lightsabre · 03/04/2019 08:30

This thread is hilarious! Coiffure du choufleur and Demi wave by Marcel made me spurt my tea out!
