Contraceptive injection, weight gain

I’ve had the injection 3 times now and have put on just over a stone. This is the heaviest I have ever been apart from when I was pregnant. I’m due to have it again in 3 weeks but I won’t be having it as I can’t be this weight!

Has anyone experienced weight gain, and did you manage to lose it when you stopped the injection?
I know people May say to eat less, but I am, but still gaining weight. I’d appreciate any replies from people with any experience of it.

I've not had the injection but did put loads of weight on when I was on the mini pill. I was eating too much but I just couldn't satisfy my appetite. I put on about 3 stone. I lost it all when I stopped taking the pill as was less hungry and started exercising more. It did take about a year though. Even when pregnant I didn't put on as much weight as I did on that pill.

I’ve been on the injection for 2 years and not put any weight on, sorry OP.

Thanks for the replies I was on the pill for 20 years with no issues, but I got a migraine and they stopped me having it. I walk on average 17000 steps a day and I eat less now than before the injection so I can think it’s anything but that. I’ve looked on my Fitbit app and I was around the same weight for 4 years before the injection. I just hope I can lose it quickly when I stop as no clothes fit!

I use Evra patches as the coil and pill didn't work for me, used to use the injection years ago and I gained weight on that, these patches have been brilliant although not suitable for everyone.

What type of pill were you on? I was on the combined pill (microgynon) for years with no problem. It was only when I switched to the progesterone only pill (due to migraines) that I had the problem.

I had the injection for a few years and I put on so much weight. I’ll never forget the nurse saying ‘I can’t even find your hip bone to give you the injection’ it was then I thought I’d had enough of it and stopped.
When I stopped I lost it all and went back to a size 10. Without even trying.
I also got terrible headaches and anxiety. It did the job though.

I came off the injection this time last year and have lost 10 pounds since, it was great not having periods & not having to remember to take the pill, but the weight loss is better!

Thanks everyone. Did you really have to diet to lose the weight?

I put on three stone and have struggled with my weight since when I never struggled before. I wasn’t eating anymore than usual either.

Are you talking about depo provera? One of the well known side effects is weight gain. Please talk to your GP again about other options
