Unexpected payments into my bank

WhenTheDragonsCame · 01/04/2019 23:07

I was checking my bank account earlier and found four payments from the same account totalling £265 that I don't think should be there. I'm guessing they have been paid in by mistake.

I'm going to call the bank tomorrow but is there anything they can even tell me with Data protection (or whatever it's called now)?

I'm really worried they are going to take it back straight away and I don't have the money at the moment.

The sort code is the same as mine so the account was opened in the same branch. I've checked through my previous payments and the account numbers don't match.

They won't be able to tell you whose account it is. Is your account a sole or joint account?

youngestisapsycho · 01/04/2019 23:11

Have you spent the money then? Did you not wonder why you had extra money in your account?

SeventhWave · 01/04/2019 23:14

How do you know their sort code and account number?

When you say ‘earlier’ what do you mean? Earlier today? Last week ? Last month?

dementedpixie · 01/04/2019 23:15

Often payments will show the originating account details

WhenTheDragonsCame · 01/04/2019 23:21

DementedPixie its a sole account

I was checking this evening as trying to work out paying the childminder. I am not very good at keeping track of my accounts Blush

If I told them I'm not expecting the money would they contact the payer to say it's gone to the wrong place?

So are you saying that £265 has landed into your bank account this evening and that you have spent it already? Even though you were not expecting it and don’t know where it came from?

WhenTheDragonsCame · 01/04/2019 23:30

In my online banking it shows sort code and account number but no name.

The reference is MOBILE-CHANNEL FT which according to Twitter means funds transfer. It looks like a few people have had unexpected debits or credit with this reference.

I will call tomorrow.

LovingLola no the amount has been paid in over 4 payments since the end of February and I've only just noticed them tonight.

I really can't remember my account unexpectedly going up. I have got that amount but it would leave me with very little until next week and I have a few direct debits going out and I need petrol to get to work.

Good to check with the bank. In the meantime beware of some scams that seem to pretend to or actually over pay you, so that they can get you to refund them the 'mistake', and in the meantime they manage to get you to help them gain access to your computer. We almost had £3000 taken out of our account once, when the scammers (pretending to be BT) said they had over paid us. Luckily Nationwide were on the ball and stopped the suspicious transaction. Just be very suspicious of any unusual bank activity - in just as much as out!

WhenTheDragonsCame · 01/04/2019 23:55

This is very embarrassing! I have just phoned the bank and they said it was me transferring money from my savings account! Blush I didn't even think to check that account number Blush

I don't remember transferring any today though and there was a £5 credit.

My excuse is I'm quite stressed at the moment and not getting enough sleep at the moment Blush

Oh well, at least it’s your money!

homethenababy · 01/04/2019 23:58

@WhenTheDragonsCame at least you know!

I've wracked my brains over bank statements before only to find out it's a regular payment. No harm done

Imstickingwiththisone · 01/04/2019 23:59

Grin mystery solved! I wonder if it was the same for the other people you saw on twitter

WhenTheDragonsCame · 02/04/2019 00:04

Imstickingwiththisone possibly. I have phoned my mum and messaged a friend to see if they knew anything. At least they will have a good laugh when I explain tomorrow Blush🤦🏻‍♀️

At least I now know I'm not so bad as to not notice a sudden £200 credit, just so forgetful I don't remember a month later!
