Car help needed

My car spectacularly failed its MOT, to the point where it's not worth paying to repair it. My dad has kindly offered to loan me some money to get a newer one. I've got a budget of around £4K. Any recommendations?

Depends on many factors!... Small car? Big car? Kids or just you? Large dog?
I have had MANY cars (40+) as I love driving and get bored easily, but never expensive ones. My best small car that was practical (ie not a Smart Fortwo or a 2 seater convertible) was actually a Nissan Micra! Totally reliable, brilliant on fuel and surprisingly spacious and I kept it for 120k miles. I also had a nice little Citroen C1

VW Polos bore me but they are also practical and hold their value. Toyotas are reliable (I had an Aygo, identical to the C1 but slightly nicer)

Big cars... I have to say our VW Sharan was fabulous, and currently we run a Peugeot estate diesel which has the most amazing MPG and is a fabulous load lugger.

Currently running and old but V low mileage (11k!) Ford Streetka which is awesome to drive but is very thirsty,

Go and try out lots of cars ..you'll know the right one when you drive it!
