Anyone know anything about photoshop filters/effects?

I've had photoshop for ages but only really use if for photo editing, not for anything fancy, and I'm aware of how much work goes into the amazing graphic effects some professionals can achieve with it.

That said, i believe you can buy packages of 'effects' to download, and I was wondering if I could buy one that does the colourful 'paint splatter' type effect to apply to a black-and-white head shot of my daughter to make an arty-type print for my wall. My questions are 1) Would this be a waste of money, as I would need weeks of training to make it work well, and 2) If i could do it, where do you download photoshop 'effects' from that is reputable and not going to bring viruses with them?

Photoshop is Adobe.

I can't advise regarding the effects as I am still using a full version which is out of date, and the effects are included up to a point.

Actually, having said that, have you looked at the effects in the 'filters' or had a look at online tutorials which you can often adapt to suit what you already have? (Or find an Idiots Guide to Photoshop which makes it fairly simple.)

You can download lots of free brushes for full version photoshop which I guess would work with Elements version. Just google "free photoshop brushes paint splatter" or similar. Sometimes they are zip files and need extracting. As long as you move the brushes from your downloads folder to your main brushes folder, you should be able to find them within the brushes tool. Then change size, colour, opacity etc to your heart's content!
