Does anyone know how to find out someone’s Prisoner Number?

I’d like to visit someone who has sadly ended up in prison and I need their prisoner number to arrange it. I can’t find anything on line about how to search for that. Can anyone help?

They'll contact you if they want a visit.

Can you not ask the individual for it - they need to add you to their visitor list in any event before you can visit?

You can ask the prison if you know their fulname and dob, if the prisoner consents

You can't just arrange to go, they have to send you a v.o ( visiting order )

The person in prison has to add you to their list but there's info here.

In Scotland you can not arrange a visit. The prisoner has to arrange it. They will need your name, dob, and maybe address (can't remember). I assume everywhere else in the uk is the same.

Thanks for the answers everyone. I thought if I had the number I could request it online and they accept or not.

Many moons ago I knew someone who went to prison and I went to visit but had to trace.

You can email the main prison database thing and they then make contact with the person you want to visit who can give you permission to go visit. Their email is

My partner of 12 years is in prison and as I'm currently homeless I was subject to a mugging as a result every bit of personal information was stolen which included letters I'd received from my partner in HMP Berwyn. Is there any way of finding out his prison number without having a fixed abode? HMP Berwyn is a super jail with approximately 2,000 inmates in it. Anyway can ANYONE help??
