Can anyone help me with a gardening question please

We have a long fence in the garden that I'd like to have climbing plants growing up it to take away the starkness, but there's no earth below it so would need planters. I haven't a clue what to buy,, need something extremely easy as I'm not a gardener at all.
Also how long does it take to grow?
Thanks

Which way does the fence face? I.e. how much sun does it get? Plants grown in deep shade are generally slower.

It gets a decent amount of sun during the day but as I'm in Scotland sometimes the sun hides away!

Get a clematis. Clematis Montana is fairly bomb proof and fast growing. You could get a different variety that flowers at a different time of year too for prolonged colour. Montana flowers in May.

Clematis Montana I agree with - just check the size of the variety you get - unless you’re happy to prune. They can get enormous!
Only bad thing about clematis is they are bare in the winter. Get a honeysuckle to go with it. I have an evergreen one and it is very tough and grows very quickly. It flowers like mad, smells great and the insects love it!

You will need large tubs.

Also, even if you only attach some trellis to the fence, that in itself will make it look a lot nicer.
