Does anyone else get diarrhea from kale? why?

Have tried steamed kale, boiled kale, blended kale - all cause diarrhea. I wash it quite thoroughly beforehand to try and get of dirt/chemicals etc.

Does anyone also get this (if so, what's the underlying science for this?) or is this a sort of allergic response?

Me. I can only eat small quantities. It’s quite common. Black kale has the worst effect on me.

Isn't it because of the high fibre and water content?

I can't eat any brassicas as they trigger IBS. My system can't cope with the insoluble fibre. Same with beans and pulses. Some foods, however tasty, I just have to accept I cannot eat.

Spinach has all the nutrition of kale but is much easier to digest.

No. But apparently I do get it from cream cakes... ConfusedSad

With kale, it'll be the high insoluble fibre content causing the runs. If introduced carefully it's possible for the gut to get more used to it (I always get a bit 'looser' at the start of summer with all the fresh veg and salads coming in) but equally you may find it's too harsh for your gut and you're better off with sweet peppers, tomatoes and jacket spuds.

Cream cakes causing problems as per a PP upthread sound, on the other hand, like a possible gall bladder issue. You can't absorb the fat so it's coming straight back out. Think of it as like being permanently on Alli fat blocker pills. Smile
