Anybody know the laws for driving in America?

Are you allowed to talk on a hand-held phone whilst driving in The States? I've been watching a few American reality tv shows & they're forever on their phones whilst at the wheel. No one seems to use hands-free. Just curious..

There's an episode of Gilmore Girls from 2007ish where Emily is pulled over by the police for using her phone without hands free. Not that this is where I get my legal information Blush but maybe it varies by state?

Erm. Google?

It all varies by state.
Where we lived it was supposed to be illegal to talk on the phone when driving, but hands free was OK. Most people put them on speaker to chat and drive.

It varies by state but most places it is illegal. That's relatively recent though.

Depends on state.

New Hampshire, illegal to talk. However seatbelts and insurance are not a requirement.

Maine, legal to talk, but require seatbelts and insurance.
