Confused

Hello
I’m 25 weeks pregnant and my DH has two job offers. One requires relocation and the other requires 35-55 mins commute.
Both the companies are attractive and offers same pay. But one with the relocation also requires frequent travel outside UK.
Now bearing these situations in mind, could you guys please give us your suggestions and help us choose the offer
PS- we have no family or friends in UK
He started looking for jobs because he was made redundant!
TIA

I wouldn't want my DH to have a job which required travel away when I had a baby/young child. It is full on with a newborn and I 100% would have developed PND without the support and practical help from my DH. But then how does your DP feel about adding an extra 1-2 hours onto his working day?

SoyDora · 30/03/2019 07:34

35-55 mins is a fairly standard commute.
DH worked away when I had a toddler and a newborn and it was pretty tough.

Check the commute time when he would be traveling, a 30 mins journey on a Saturday could be an hour on Monday morning. Otherwise it's personal choice, career prospects etc

seven201 · 30/03/2019 07:39

33-55 mins is a pretty standard commute. I used to do 1 1/4 hrs each way, and my husband does the same now. I think he should pick the job he'll find most interesting

WinkysTeatowel · 30/03/2019 07:50

Commute sounds totally doable and preferable to regular trips away to me.

How far is the other commute?

farfromhome24 · 30/03/2019 09:00

Thanks for your replies ladiesSmile. DH can't make up his mind. He's been changing his mind everyday since a week , it's driving me insaneConfusedI guess I prefer the daily commute to frequent travel away if we put it that way. It's down to me to decide and it makes me nervous if I'm choosing the best for him.

Since you're looking at relocation with one option, why not look at it for the commuting option too (ie move nearer so the commute is less)?

farfromhome24 · 30/03/2019 09:06

@WinkysTeatowel for the other company, we could rent a house 10-20 min away max. He's always been just 7 min away from home. So it's new for us. Also I don't drive, so he takes me everywhere.

If he’s jobs are equal and future prospects are roughly the same then I’d go forbthe commute ..... uprooting you all from your current home and then adding frequent overseas travel to mix leaves your DH missing out on family time and you carrying an increased parental load for no real gain in terms of future earnings

farfromhome24 · 30/03/2019 09:09

@DisplayPurposesOnly I've suggested that too but the closer company doesn't offer relocation assistance while the other one does i.e company contributes to rent, pays off previous contracts, removal charges etc.

35-55 minutes is surely just getting into work not a commute?

jellycatspyjamas · 30/03/2019 09:21

I wouldn’t be wanting to throw a house move into the mix tbh, the journey to work sounds fine to me - I do the same for my job. I’d also make learning to drive a priority if at all possible.
