To buy second hand - Washer or Dryer?

We're moving somewhere where we have to have our own white goods. My DGM has offered to pay for one of them, we will get the other probably from gumtree or facebook.

Does anyone have any experience in which one is better to buy new than second hand? I'm leaning towards asking for a washing machine as it will get more use than a tumble dryer which we'll only use occasionally.

I'd get the washing machine new. Just because you know how old it will be. Tumble dryers seem to last longer imo (my last one lasted 15 years) and don't get used as much. Especially with the nice weather now you can use a line.

I've never had a tumble dryer but I did have a second-hand Indesit washing machine until a month ago, when it conked out and wasn't worth repairing. However, it was a reconditioned machine, was sold to me by a local firm of white goods traders and engineers, came with a six month guarantee and lasted for six years, having done an average of three washes per week. It didn't owe me anything.

My replacement washing machine was brand new very recently and was only £300 - cheap compared to some models. It's a Hotpoint.

HTH.
