WWUD first?

If you wanted to move from one part of the UK to the other what would you do first? Need to sell our house, get jobs in new location, get mortgage for new house....

We also have cats and dogs which may make it very difficult to rent for a short period until we buy a house...

Obviously can't pack in job until find new ones.

Would you buy a small property just to get you started so you didn't need to get a mortgage straight off... or maybe look at buying a small new build? Would this make the process any easier?

Any ideas really appreciated!

I’ve done a long distance move, although it was international I still think a lot of the logistics are the same. Personally I’d do:

  1. New jobs
  2. Put the house up for sale
  3. Rent in the new location for a while- leave the pets temporarily with a friend/relative if you can’t find a suitable rental (our cat stayed with my Mum for a couple of months before flying out)
  4. Look to buy a new house once yours has completed and your initial lease is up. The added benefit of doing it this way is that you’ll have ample time to scope out the new area and you can make a fully informed decision on where you want to live.

Your plan of buying a small placeholder house might work out expensive if you want to move again quickly- if you’re considering it then I’d do some calculations on stamp duty, solicitors, surveys, agents fees to see what you’d realistically be looking at.

Good luck with the move Grin
