Toddler urine stink out of rug?!?!

Gardeningquestion · 27/03/2019 17:31

My toddler peed on the rug on Saturday and I didn’t clean it properly, in hindsight (discovered that after I sniffed it on Sunday). Since then, I’ve tried the Rug Doctor urine spray and vinegar, bicarbonate and water - but the stink is still there! Helllllp! I love this rug so much!

Can you get it outside to air it?

Can you spot clean it with soapy water?

I treidd soapy water in the first instance, might try it again. I will also put it in the garden to air tomorrow, good idea!

Ooh didn’t know there was a Vanish carpet spray. I love Vanish! I’m guessing it didn’t bleach your rug?

Clean it with Bio washing detergent let it dry completely then sprinkle with bicarbonate of soda leave over night and hoover then spray with something like fabreeze.

Mixing vinegar and bicarb together doesn't work, it just neutralises and turns into a salty water solution. Either should work on wee, but I'd go for bicarb alone, much more effective. Sprinkle a shit ton on and leave for a couple of hours, then hoover it up.

DontCallMeShitley · 27/03/2019 19:02

Is it just the rug or the floor underneath? It may have soaked through.

Janek · 27/03/2019 19:04

I have used febreeze to great effect in a similar (but worse!) situation.

Outside on line

Simple solution, is amazing. It's a pet urine cleaner but works well for toddler mishaps as well. It's in a blue bottle, pets at home sell it.

Gardeningquestion · 28/03/2019 09:38

Ooh I’m going to try all of these in turn! I think the rug is my favourite object I own in the whole house Grin

(That’s interesting about the vinegar and bicarb together. I didn’t realise! Sprinkling it and hoovering it up reminds me of the old Shake and Vacs!)

Another vote for Simple Solution. Although it is expensive, it really works. You can use it for all types of spills and stains, food, wine, blood, vomit, urine and faeces, mud and grass stains - in fact everything that is difficult and smelly to remove. The enzymes in Simple Solution just digest the biological residue and it smells nice as well.
