Is there such a thing as a decent shop bought pie?

I want pie for dinner next week. I do not want to make the pie, as I'll be baking about 5 different ones due to various diets in the household.
Vegetarian, austism, fussiness, stubbornness.

I just want to buy the pies. However, I want a decent, tasty pie, for all of our preferences.

Any suggestions I would be so grateful for Smile

Pieminster individual pies especially the one called Kevin which my children find funny as it’s the name of our deceased hamster

Bluerussian · 26/03/2019 18:44

I like Higgedy pies, especially the ones with cherry tomatoes and feta cheese.

the sainsburys own brand ones are tasty and come in a variety of types x

Pieminister Heidi pie is vegetarian and yummy, they do a range of other too but they are individual. Often on 2 for £x in Tesco, and I expect other supermarkets will have offers on at various points.

Go to a local farm shop or deli?

CherryPavlova · 26/03/2019 18:46

I think you have to go to a farmers market or small specialist shop. Maybe Cook. ( but never tried them)? I think it might be easier to manage make your own but use ready made pastry.

John Thorner’s pies are lovely - really well filled and great pastry.

Hoppinggreen · 26/03/2019 18:49

Have you got a farm shop near you?
Ours does great pies. Other than that Pieminster ones are ok

MoMandaS · 26/03/2019 18:49

The mushroom pie from the M&S vegan range is delicious. Lovely pastry and rich gravy. Charlie Bigham does a steak pie which I'm told is very good as "not herby".

CCquavers · 26/03/2019 18:49

Marks and Spencer have a to die for meat pie to serve 4 (or 2 greedy people). It is the best pie I have ever tasted and I used to eat a lot of them. Pieminster and pukka are ok but their recipes have changed as they’ve become bigger companies. I don’t know if marks do a veg pie though. They may do a pasty type thing. To me it’s all in the butter pastry...

JockMcGraw · 26/03/2019 18:51

Agrees with poster up thread about Higgedy pies. Great veggie range (and vegan!). They are expensive though....and I can only ever find a decent range is sainsbury's.

PoppingBubbles · 26/03/2019 18:52

Oh, so many replies so quickly.
I see a couple of votes for higgidy.

CCquavers - what is the pie called? Steak?

I'd ideally like to get them all from under the same roof, if possible.

Just 1 vegetarian in the house, the rest of us like (different) pie fillings for all the above reasons.

Damn threads like this make me miss the UK.

Ginkythefangedhellpigofdoom · 26/03/2019 18:53

I had a leek and potato pukka pie last week as they were on offer for £1 I wasn't expecting much but actually it was really nice. I got my Dp a steak and a chicken one and he said they were nice.

Ginkythefangedhellpigofdoom · 26/03/2019 18:54

They were all individual sized so you could get different ones for different people.

Madbengalmum · 26/03/2019 18:58

M and S Pies are the best!

AnneElliott · 26/03/2019 19:08

I agree that it's M&S all the way! DH refuses to eat them from anywhere else.

Palominoo · 26/03/2019 19:10

Mr Nice Pie. Might only be in Wales though.

LiquoriceLane · 26/03/2019 19:11

I'll second(third?) Pieminister.

MotherofPearl · 26/03/2019 19:58

Damn. This thread has forced me to add a load of pies to my online shop! Grin

anniehm · 26/03/2019 20:17

Aldi's are fine, they have several kinds including 3 veggie options
