Moving house - what might have I forgot to do?

shakeapoo · 26/03/2019 11:32

Removals booked
Cleaners coming
Money ready to go

To do:
Home insurance
Look at energy providers
Change address at various places

I must be missing some things? First house move in 6 years and first time buying so feel pretty out of the loop!

Thanks Smile

remember to take your meter readings on the day you move out.

I got a pack together of instruction booklets for cooker, dishwasher etc together and wrote a list of bin days, alarm code and useful telephone numbers etc for the new owners. Set up a mail redirection, patched up any holes in the walls from taking down pictures, wall cupboards etc. Cleaned and packed what I could beforehand like kitchen cupboards and fridges and freezers and tried to eat up stuff from the freezer.

Book an online shopping order for when you get there so that you can restock the basics (and heavy stuff).

Have you got pets ? Get them new ID tags and tell your current vet you are moving and where to incase your pets make a break for it and end up back at your old home .
Cancel milk, window cleaners, gardeners.
Leave a forwarding address in case some errant post still finds it way to your old home.

Make sure you have a tea box ready because the removal people (and you) will need tea, coffee and biscuits.

Put your valuables somewhere safe. There are certain things that I always put in the car because I don’t want them going in the van.

Clothes for everyone on moving day, but don’t leave them out. They’ll get packed! (Speaking from experience, when clean knickers were swept away)

empty & detach water pipes drains from washing machine a couple of days before - in case the pipes/turning off switches are stuck (happened to us one move we had to go back to collect washing machine /empty & pack shed/garage & sort out plants/pots you want to take put extra keys for windows doors on kitchen window sill with appropriate labels

Make sure kettle and stuff for tea in a box to take with you in the car. Also, speak to your internet provider about booking in the moving of your service, this otherwise will take a few days once you move.

shakeapoo · 26/03/2019 14:31

That's a good one about the Internet, thanks. Moving from rented so leaving washing machine behind.
