Golden Retriever, Flat-coated Retriever

Pardon my ignorance but are these two dogs distinct breeds, or is the Golden just a FCR with a golden-coloured coat ?

They're two distinct breeds:

Golden Retriever

Flat Coated Retriever

Flat coats are usually either black or liver but they do occasionally come in the same colour as goldies although breeding them intentionally is very much frowned upon

Thankyou both. I've never seen a liver-coloured retriever but certainly a few black ones. Possibly golden ones too, assuming they weren't actual Golden Retrievers.
