Game of Thrones - do I need to watch from Series 1?

Never seen an episode but now I quite fancy it. Do I really need to watch from the very start or can I slot in from a later series and still work out what's going on?

Yes, and you need to pay attention too!
Luckily each series is quite short, no more than ten episodes. It will not take you long to catch up.

EspressoPatronum · 25/03/2019 12:17

Yeah.. you need to stay at the beginning I'm afraid!

Yeah you do.

We're just rewatching them all and I have to say it's so much easier second time around and watching the seasons back to back.

Watch with subtitles too.

Aberforthsgoat · 25/03/2019 12:18

Yes absolutely, a lot of it won't make any sense if you just dive in and you won't have gone through all the character arcs/sub plots etc so the reveals will just full flat.

All or nothing I'm afraid.

magicstar1 · 25/03/2019 12:35

Definitely. I did six seasons in a week just before season 7 started...I was knackered but it was worth it.

TheInvestigator · 25/03/2019 12:37

Yes. There is just way to much back story and too many interconnecting stories for you to jump in at any other point.

But it's absolutely worth all the hours it will take!!

TheQueef · 25/03/2019 12:38

Right you need 68 uninterrupted hours plus snacks and drinks.
If you have kids send them to some residential camp.
You will be hooked by episode 2 so no chores etc Grin

Still18atheart · 25/03/2019 12:38

Yes you do. Too much backstory and the only way you can find out who everyone is and relationships to other characters.

Ive watched from beginning and still tones when I’m like what’s just happened and why

FurryDogMother · 25/03/2019 12:44

I watched the entire thing in 2 weeks the October before last, when my Dad was in hospital for major surgery - it was the only thing that kept me sane and took my mind off things. You would be missing so much if you didn't start at the beginning - it's well worth it!

AdamNichol · 25/03/2019 12:55

As the others have said, the story will only really make sense if you watch from start.
The good news is that this is a good thing; top drawer writing, acting, etc. It really doesn't take any time for the whole thing to warm up and get going.
BTW, prepare to learn what it is to truly hate a fictional character.

HarrySnotter · 25/03/2019 13:49

Ok so I've got shit loads of time ahead recovering from surgery so it looks like I'll be watching from the beginning. It better be worth it!!

WeepingWillowWeepingWino · 25/03/2019 13:53

it is very good, though slow to get going.

it is also very violent and very rapey.

TheQueef · 25/03/2019 13:54

Possibly tell family/friends and neighbours you are off on holiday.
It'll explain the curtains closed and deter visitors.

sugarcubed · 25/03/2019 13:55

It is!!!

Enjoy Wine

Quecom · 25/03/2019 13:57

Sure you should!

BearSoFair · 25/03/2019 14:01

Yes, it's essentially one very long story that runs throughout the seasons so definitely need to watch them all from the beginning. It's worth it though, I'm having a big rewatch from the start in the lead up to season 8!

Cannyhandleit · 25/03/2019 14:16

Yes! And when you’ve finished watch them all again cause you will miss loads the first time round!

AdamNichol · 25/03/2019 14:23

When you're done, you might want to check out: Vikings, Spartacus, Black Sails, and Rome [in no particular order].

aposterhasnoname · 25/03/2019 14:24

I’m so jealous, I wish I was watching for the first time. I’m on about my fifth full rewatch now, it’s so good.

WeepingWillowWeepingWino · 25/03/2019 14:35

I really wouldn't watch Vikings straight after GoT, Vikings is good but in comparison to GoT it is really the poor relation.

TimeIhadaNameChange · 25/03/2019 14:43

It might be an eye to bookmark this page. There's a map, and details about who's who. The good thing is that you can set your episode (as it were) so you don't get spoilers.

Be prepared to be very confused. I had no idea who was who for the first few episodes as there are a LOT of characters. Much easier second time around. But it will get easier to follow.

Enjoy!

WeepingWillowWeepingWino · 25/03/2019 14:44

there are also a lot of very fit men

Iloveacurry · 25/03/2019 14:46

Yes you do, you’ll love it.

BareGrylls · 25/03/2019 14:47

If you find rape entertaining you'll love it.
