Calpol after 1st immunisations - help!!

Took my 9 week old baby for his 1st immunisations today and it was awful. He screamed and cried with actual tears which made me feel horrendous Sad

Anyway the nurse told me to get some calpol as babies normally get a temp after the jabs apparently. I've just bought some sugar free calpol but I don't think he swallowed any of it as it's all down his front abc he pulled a face.

Should I have got the sugar one? Would it taste better? Do I just wait the 4 hours until giving him another dose?

The sugar free one has artificial sweeteners so it doesn't really matter which one you get from a taste perspective. It's just new to baby. Squeeze it into the side of the cheek bit by bit and let him swallow. Yes I'd wait 4 hours until another dose as it's quite likely more went in than you think.

My youngest took it better with a spoon rather than the syringe, so could maybe try that. and just a little bit at a time.

Yep, agree with sohot. Squeeze into the back of his cheek, they don't spit it out quite as much and wait four hours for the next dose. Baby will prob sleep extra long today!

My little guy doesn’t like calpol much either, ( just had his 4 month immunisations) I think it was the trying to swallow it that caused most of the distress as this time round he is starting to get how to do it and has finally stopped refusing to open his mouth.

Ours is the sugar free... did you squirt it in little bits ... kinda keep there head semi back ( at an angle ) ... I have found When giving it in my own it’s easiest to do whilst baby is lying down ... giving it In little bits ... wait for the swallow and continue .... he doesn’t get as upset because it’s not an overwhelming amount.

Honestly if baby is in pain or has temperature it’s fab and worth the distress of giving it rather than let them suffer just makes you feel awful

I don’t imagine you baby would like any calpol sugar or not but can try it next time? I wouldn’t give another dose as your not sure how much they actually took in wait the 4 hours x x ; if it was me.

I gave my baby a bit of a feed, enough to get him swallowing well, squirted it in then continued feeding. He's so greedy I don't think he even noticed

Thanks everyone. I'll wait the 4 hours then try doing it bit by bit. Fingers crossed he doesn't get a temperature!

Try popping it in a teat and allow him to suck it rather than squirting it in using a syringe.
