Fun swimming pool by public transport near Leeds?

I'd like to take my 3 year old to a fun swimming pool with slides, or a pirate ship, or something other than the boring square council kids pools we have anywhere near home.

I don't drive so would need to be able to get us there by bus and/or train from Leeds without much walking.

Any suggestions please? Thank you!

I have been to Calypso Cove a couple of times on our way to visit Eureka. Don't live anywhere close though so cannot advise on whether or not you can get there without a car.

Barnsley Metrodome is good for kids, there's loads to do, and it's easy to get to by bus from Leeds.

Try Huddersfield leisure centre.

I was going to say Huddersfield leisure centre too, it has a splash pool, you could get the train and then walk there? Although 20/30min walk from the station

Igottastartthinkingbee · 24/03/2019 20:48

There’s a good pool in Keighley but I’m not sure about transport aspect sorry.

Igottastartthinkingbee · 24/03/2019 20:52

Oh I just looked it up, 9 mins walk (although will obviously be longer with 3 year old in tow) from the station to Keighley leisure centre.

Huddersfield leisure centre is good for kids who are confident in the water. Not as far from the bus station as it is from the train station, just under the subway(?) tunnel that goes under the ring road and you're there.
I can't think how you'd get to Barnsley metrodome without doing a train with a change and a bus but I admit public transport isn't my strong point!

whatsthecomingoverthehill · 24/03/2019 20:54

Barnsley metrodome (calypso cove) is the best around, with a wave pool and pirates ship. Train is probably the easiest, about a half mile walk at Barnsley end.

Oh, I'd forgotten about the one in Huddersfield.

If you want a big day out, there's the Scarborough waterpark, so you could combine it with the beach, Peasholm Park etc, or even go there on holiday/short break.

Is the Richard Dunn pool in Bradford still open? That had slides, but I thought it might have been closing or redeveloped.

Thanks everyone these are great suggestions!

I think we'll do Barnsley's Calypso Cove in the Easter holidays, it looks amazing. Is there much else to do in Barnsley? Good charity shops and a Wetherspoons maybe?

Will try Huddersfield too another time, and I'm saving Scarborough for my birthday cos I think they let you in free on your birthday (and it will be warmer then) Grin

There's a nice wetherspoons in the town centre (Joseph Bramah), better if you sit upstairs. The market is well worth a mooch around, I know it's closed one day a week (possibly Thursday?!) but it's a good market when it's all open!

EatsFartsAndLeaves · 25/03/2019 21:32

Perfect, thank you!

Look up Hathersage swimming pool. It's a heated outdoor pool near Sheffield that looks amazing. I follow it on Facebook (keep meaning to go) and they've just added a huge inflatable (assault course looking thing) for children.

SleepyFlump · 25/03/2019 22:42

Calypso Cove is great!

MissGuernsey · 28/03/2019 23:59

Just up from the Joseph Bramah pub there is an award winning free museum called 'The Barnsley Experience' located in the Town Hall. Lovely modern fountains outside too which I have seen kids paddling in.

Lots of charity shops especially in the pedestrinised street behind M & S, just a couple of minutes from the pub.

I second the market which has just been rebuilt. It is open Monday to Saturday now but I think the main days are Wednesday, Fridays and Saturdays. It was closed on Thursday for years.

All the venues mentioned are a short walk from the train station. Try and travel on the fast train from Leeds and vice versa as it is quicker.

There is a small art gallery near the Town Hall (Cooper Art Gallery). They sometimes have events for kids.

Thanks MissGuernsey I was having a total blank on charity shops! Good to know the new market opening times too, I haven't been for a while but loved the new market when i went on opening day.

EatsFartsAndLeaves · 08/04/2019 20:58

Thanks again everyone, we went to Calypso Cove today and had a ball, followed by loads of charity shops and a brief trip to the museum just before it closed for the day. Great day out!
