Mooncup blues

BlueAndYellowPurplePills · 24/03/2019 20:36

Mooncup lovers help me please.

This thing is uncomfortable, what am I doing wrong?

Size A. (Two kids and I’m over 30)
Tried it yesterday. Trimmed stem off completely.
Inserting it folded and wet.
It’s so flipping low, I can feel it. It’s chaffing even without and stem and I hate it.
I want to love it I really do.

(I feel shit every time I use a tampon even tho I don’t flush them as landfills just as bad as it ending up on a beach.)

Urg what else can I do please?

Have you had a look online at the tips and advice? When I first started using mine I spent a few days reading up on all the different tips and tricks, different ways to insert etc. It took a couple of periods to get used to it, but I'm very happy now that I switched to the mooncup!
I found it felt a bit low too, at first, and then came up with a technique to shift it a bit higher (even when opened) by pushing gently with my fingers and squeezing with my pelvic floor muscles.
Every time it felt uncomfortable I would remove and re insert. Don't soldier on if it doesn't feel right.
Good luck!

Try a different brand?

PerspicaciaTick · 24/03/2019 21:56

Is there a reason why you can't put it further up? Is it dropping back down as it fills up, or starting low?

I agree with the previous poster about trying to move it a bit further “up”. For me it took a couple of periods to “get it”. And I think it’ll probably be different for different women/ different bodies.

You could try the other size? The whole age/ number of children thing is a guide.

The other thing for me is that I can only really use it on day 2 and 3. Otherwise my period is too light and it’s uncomfortable. It’s not ideal, but I feel better that I am using less disposable sanitary products than I was.

Push it in further before you let it unfold.
I found it put pressure on my bladder no matter how high or low I had it so gave up on it in the end but that aside, I think it's a great product.

Petitprince · 24/03/2019 22:01

I feel the same. Mine hurts the most as I pull it out to empty.

cannotmakemymindup · 24/03/2019 22:02

I have recently got in to using a Mooncup to. Like you over 30, had a child size A. I also either reinsert if i think it's uncomfortable or I push a little further up after its inserted. I also find I tuck the end a little at an angle not straight out as such, but I don't know if that's as my Cervix is off to the right (I know Mooncups don't go that far up) and whether I'm all a little leaning.

I have to say using a mooncup is a little/a lot more intimate than a tampon than I was expecting. Don't really know what I was expecting but not this. However loving sleeping at night and not needing a 'nappy' pad and worried I'm going to leak sleeping at funny angles.

DrBuckles · 24/03/2019 22:03

When I first got mine I thought I’d made a huge mistake and I’d never get it- it was either too low that I could feel it scratching when I walked or so high I couldn’t get it out without lots of panic and practically labouring it out!

It’s second nature now so try and persevere to get it so it’s comfy- perhaps on days when you don’t have to go out and about too much.

I do also struggle once I get a bit dryer Blush (I keep wondering about a bit of lube but then I don’t want it to be too slippery) but like pp says take heart from the fact you are trying to reduce your use and you are doing something good!

LucyInTheSkyy · 24/03/2019 22:04

I tried 3 different brands before I found the right 'fit' and it does still leak on days 2&3 BUT I wouldn't be without it now. Well worth the faff. Maybe try a couple of different sorts? Some are softer silicone that might suit you a bit more?

cannotmakemymindup · 24/03/2019 22:04

I also find it puts a little pressure on my bladder but I think it's good pressure for me as it feels like it's propping it up a little. Hoping the muscles get stronger actually with the scaffolding as such every month.

cropcirclesinthefields · 24/03/2019 22:04

Try a different fold, I find the C fold too uncomfortable try the Punch down fold or 7 fold it should help to get it a bit higher. Failing that try a softer cup like a meluna cup.

shivermetimbers77 · 24/03/2019 22:04

I just started with the Mooncup and have had the exact same issue BlueandYellow... I read somewhere yesterday that it is all about making sure the seal is right so it doesn't slip down/leak. Squatting when inserting , pushing backwards and not upwards and making sure it is properly sealed by twisting it around a bit all seemed to help me a lot today. I think it really is all about practice..

Malope · 24/03/2019 22:14

I started with the mooncup but moved to a Ladycup. They're softer and easier to manoeuver ime.

BornInAThunderstorm · 24/03/2019 22:16

Tulipcup is much softer IMO, if getting it up a bit higher doesnt help you may just need to try a different make

Laquila · 24/03/2019 22:20

Just to note that the Meluna Classic is now softer than the Mooncup, but they do make a “soft” version which is a lot...softer.

You really do have to persevere but as a pp said, it’ll become second nature. I honestly thought I was going to pass out the first time I used one. It’s very hard to relax! I absolutely love mine now.

GoofyIsACow · 24/03/2019 22:23

I found the first period i used mine i hated it, I absolutely love it now, i agree with others that you should try and push it further up.
Something to note thought is that if I had followed advice and trimmed off the stem I would never be able to get mine out! I must have an odd shaped vagina meaning seems to disappear way up there!

SpaceCadet4000 · 25/03/2019 01:37

Highly recommend this quiz (and the wider website) for finding the right cup for you and troubleshooting problems.

putacupinit.com/the-menstrual-cup-quiz-v2/

Mooncups are quite rigid compared to other cups- there's so much variety out there now so definitely look around. Precious Star Pads on Youtube is also an amazing resource.

BlueAndYellowPurplePills · 25/03/2019 07:06

Thank you all.
I had it in over night and no leaking so the seal is fine.
TMI - it really won’t go much higher. And the bottom of the cup still sits just outside.

I’ll keep trying.
DP suggested trying the other size.
I’ll try the quiz too.
Trail and error, hey.

Meluna do lots of different sizes, colours and softness. You may find something more comfortable from them.
