Grass cutting?

Pamelaaa · 24/03/2019 08:44

My grass is looking long and starting to grow. Is it ok to cut or too early in the year yet?

Cut it whenever the ground is dry enough throughout the year. Raise height a little for the cooler part of the year. Try not to remove more than a third of the height at any single mowing. (Former sports turf greenkeeper before anyone jumps in😁). If you can, cut when the leaf is dry; the mower will do a better job.

Ours desperately needs doing, but going to wait a week so it can go in the green bin and be collected straight away.

bigbluebus · 24/03/2019 10:24

DH cut ours yesterday. I've heard a few mowers out in the last few days.

I've just started to cut mine now, if the ground is dry go for it.

Pamelaaa · 24/03/2019 10:28

Thanks. Will see how dry the ground is in a little while and will raise cutter and perhaps just give it a trim to tidy

How do you adjust the mower to cut different heights??

Dothehappydance · 24/03/2019 11:14

There should be a lever or dial at the side, usually marked in mm's. This takes the blades up and down.

Reddragonqueen · 24/03/2019 11:14

I did mine in the spell of nice weather in February! Did it yesterday also it needed doing

Ronsters · 24/03/2019 11:23

Did mine yesterday, a few of neighbours did theirs a couple of weeks back.

greenelephantscarf · 24/03/2019 11:25

I did mine yesterday. tbh could have done earlier, but it was the first time I was at home when the ground was dry enough.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 24/03/2019 11:35

I've just done mine. I gave it two cuts about three weeks ago as well, but it's been way too wet since then.

MrsDevlin · 24/03/2019 11:40

Thank you for taking the time to answer @Dothehappydance - MNetters can be a real help.

Ours is a jungle at the moment but our garden waste bin is full to the brim with holly leaves and branches, blackberry bushes, rose bush branches and other detritus so we'll have to wait until next week!

BibbityBobbityEars · 24/03/2019 13:01

Now is fine.
First couple of times I always do on a high cut.

Holidayshopping · 24/03/2019 13:06

I’ve cut mine three times already this year!

Bluntness100 · 24/03/2019 13:08

I did ours yesterday, as it was getting long, however our mower mulches, so the cuttings jist go back into the grass.

It looks a lot better now, it needed the tidy up. If it gets too long it becomes difficult to cut.

RunAndBeeHappy · 24/03/2019 13:12

anything which mulches is so much better for your grass

always cut on high, yes, you cut twice as much, but the effect and grass health will be worth it

greenelephantscarf · 24/03/2019 13:52

kept you can use the grass clippings to mulch under shrubs

DramaAlpaca · 24/03/2019 13:55

The whole neighbourhood was doing theirs yesterday, I could hear lawnmowers all day & I can hear one in the distance now. Ours got a high cut for its first trim of the year.

KeptTheBeachesShipwreckFree · 24/03/2019 16:49

greenelephantscarf we could do that with some of our grass but the lawn is very big and we don't have many bushes or shrubs (I feel like I'm making our garden sound posher than it is but I don't know how else to word it!) We used to have a lawnmower with an attachment that mulched the grass but the one we have now just spits it into the box.

HotChocolateLover · 24/03/2019 16:54

I did mine today and now there is loads in the compost bin.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 24/03/2019 17:13

Mines been cut three times this year already!

Use a high blade and make sure it’s dry and you’ll be fine. It is VERY hard to kill grass.
