Help! Sytron has turned my 3 year old into a manic hyper angry thing!

He literally started this medicine (iron supplement) yesterday and has been extremely challenging ever since. Angry, shouting, hyperactive. It seems too much of a coincidence for it not to be his medicine! A Google search doesn't find anything. Anyone had a similar issue?

Is it possible that he has a bit of a tummy ache from it?

FedUpAndTired2018 · 23/03/2019 19:57

Maybe?? He hasn't said he has, but he's also refused to eat today so maybe he has?

We had similar with antibiotics and it turned out that it had 'sunset yellow' food colouring in, which is associated with hyperactivity in children and is actually banned from children's foods (I think). Wondering if there's anything like that in your son's supplements? Do you have a full ingredients list?

My son never had an issue with Sytron, but he was a bit older. Maybe he's more full of beans because if he was anaemic it can make you pretty tired.

marvellous I wouldn't have expected it to make a difference to how he feels from the very first dose?? Frankly, if this is how he's going to be he can stay anaemic! (JOKING... ish)

Just updating for anyone who might search in future - NeedAUsernameGenerator you were right! E124 is known to cause hyperactivity in children. Back to the Dr for us...

Oh good, it sounded similar to our experience. Hopefully they can give you something else.

Did you get an alternative from the doctor? Struggling to find an alternative without colourings

FedUpAndTired2018 · 17/02/2025 22:19

Yes we did - it was Galfer we were given instead which had no side effects 🙂. The doctor made out that we were complete loons but did eventually find and offer this alternative.
