Gym newbie - where to start

I have just joined a gym and am desperate to lose weight and tone up and get fit. At the moment I am very unfit. Can anyone give some advice about some basics for me to start? Thanks

Usually when you join a gym you get an induction and they'll often suggest a programme for you to follow.

Find something you enjoy and you're more likely to stick to it.

Good luck.

Get a PT, even just one session a month with them will give you the confidence and knowledge to go it alone on your other sessions.

I start with a warm up - 5 mins on the X-trainer and then I’m straight on to the weights. I use a mix of machines and free weights. I normally concentrate on either lower body or upper body but occasionally I’ll do a full body workout. After the weights, I’ll do some core work then I’ll do cardio. Mostly HIIT for 10 mins, but if I’m feeling sore or have an injury then I’ll do a steady 30 min on one of the machines. Follow it with a nice stretch session and have some protein within half an hour of finishing to hopefully avoid DOMS!

My sessions are always between 1-2hrs, 3-4 times a week.
