I've got to have a colposcopy. Has anyone else had this procedure?

Hi there! Yes, I did in 1999. It was a very quick procedure; they spray something on that smells vinegary and then have a good look. Everything was fine. I did have to have annual smears for 10 years (which meant that I have absolutely no fear of having my 3 yearly ones now) and- touch wood- all has been fine. Don't worry about it. It wasn't too uncomfortable, from what I can remember. Good luck x

Yes. Basically a glorified smear test. Didn't take very long, had a cervical biopsy and all was fine. It was uncomfortable but I find smears uncomfortable generally. Took a pad to wear afterwards but didn't get much in the way of spotting / bleeding. It was HPV that cleared up on its own. I had another smear 6 months later, then a year after that and as both came back clear I went back on the normal 3 year cycle. Not a had a problem since.

Yup, twice. First one was 29 years ago and they zapped the rogue cells off. Second time last year and all was fine. Vague discomfort, but no pain.

About 15 years ago yes. They basically had a good look at the cervix; I could see it on the screen too-I was given the option whether to see it or not. They took a punch biopsy-I did have some bleeding after and period type cramps.
They were very good explaining exactly what they would look for and what they were doing.
I didn't need any treatment but had a couple of follow ups at the coloposcopy clinic then annual smears for 10 years (this may have changed now though).

@Vino I don't fancy someone punching my vagina! Grin

Yes and I had the same experience as @KatnissKringle. It is not painful, only uncomfortable. It also made me a bit more chilled out about the whole smear test experience.

Vinorosso74 · 23/03/2019 11:35

Oops not the best wording! Be grateful I don't work in the medical profession.
That's just the name they used for the biopsy from the cervix.

Yes after my very first smear came back abnormal I had to have one. It was a bit horrifying as because as if it all happening on my first experience of this wasnt bad enough, I also had three trainees in the room watching the doctor! However the procedure itself wasn't too bad. I remember being told to cough three times and heard a spongey sounding snip on the third cough! Had annual smears since apart from last year when I was pregnant...in fact had my last one yesterday. You'll be fine honestly.

swirlette · 23/03/2019 11:42

Yes, 3 weeks ago had colposcopy and lletz. Totally fine, just like an extended smear. Have a look on the Jo's trust website if you're worried, they have lots of info.

TheMightyToosh · 23/03/2019 11:50

Yes, it was no worse than the smear IME.

They put mine up on screen so got a good look at my cervix Shock
