Reassurance needed with 5yo

We have one 5yo DS and we are going through a rough patch at the moment.

He won't listen to anyone; us or his school teachers. He does whatever he wants and will kick and hit me and DH if he's having a tantrum.

We've also got food refusal problems. He tells me what he wants, watches me cook it and then still announces it's disgusting and refuses it. I've tried a range of strategies for this but no change yet.

The teachers are excluding him from class for up to half an hour if he repeatedly refuses to engage and disrupts the lesson. He goes into the pre school. This has happened twice now.

We have drastically cut screen time to no effect and try to praise good behaviour - but it's hard to praise something that isn't happening.

He's doing well academically and is popular but I definitely have a class clown.

Is this just a phase? Is it usual at five? What would you suggest to improve things?
