We sang Penny Lane in choir in Primary School. Would've loved waterloo sunset too.

MutantDisco · 22/03/2019 19:12

Ah, a great song. I bumped into Ray Davies a few years ago in Hampstead, completely barking Grin

Wren77 · 22/03/2019 19:14

Aw I have a massive love for that song - mine and DHs 'first dance' 11 years ago. We were living in at the time but returned home to marry. We have since returned home permanently but whenever I hear that song it reminds me of carefree times of being young and in love and in London. Such a gorgeous song.

'in London' that should say

My DS (19) came home from guitar lessons having learned "Play That Funky Music"....... which is from 1976 so "old person music" IHO.

WinnerWinnerChickenDinner0 · 22/03/2019 19:23

My 4 year old is learning “video killed the radio star” with actions.

It is hilarious 😂

We always sang 50s and 60s songs in school, I still regularly break into ‘raining in my heart’... my family are so lucky Wink
Never ever did hymns, lots of Beatles and Elvis.

Buddy Holly?! I love it!

Waterloo Sunset would be my desert island song. It's so evocative. I know all the buildings on the North Bank really well from my long days of commuting and I could imagine little stories going on behind the windows of the National Liberal Club (for example). And of course imagine Terry and Julie's future together... Would keep me occupied while I wait to be rescued.

DontCallMeCharlotte · 22/03/2019 20:12

And DH and I used to meet at Waterloo when we first started "courting" 💘

BartonHollow · 22/03/2019 20:12

Erm...

Is he in the school were a mnetter asked for music suggestions and Waterloo Sunset was suggested?

Grin🤔

MutantDisco · 22/03/2019 20:33

Haha @BartonHollow that's brilliant - link to the thread??

jackparlabane · 22/03/2019 20:41

I prefer the Cathy Dennis cover...

Ds confused me by coming home from nursery and demanding the baa baa song. Not black sheep, not old Macdonald... Barbara Ann. The 'music man' was bored of the Beatles so was working through Beach Boys instead.

BartonHollow · 22/03/2019 22:08

@MutantDisco

I always struggle with linking within the app and it launches the app when I try and go round it but it's the British songs what songs scream British to you thread

RightOcciputAnterior · 23/03/2019 07:06

Waterloo Sunset is one of my favourite songs ever - reminds me of the 3 years I spent living in London Grin

Bluesheep8 · 23/03/2019 08:10

barton I immediately thought of that other thread too! Because Waterloo Sunset was definitely suggested in there. How lovely if so.

CoperCabana · 23/03/2019 08:19

Mine (primary) have come home singing Sweet but a Psycho!!! Hmm

Processedpea · 23/03/2019 08:22

Our music teacher made us learn Your Song by Elton John in the 80s

sluj · 23/03/2019 08:25

Ah, Waterloo Sunset reminds me of the last year I spent working for the Greater London Council before we were abolished. That was the name of our staff newsletter and played at all the winding down parties... and there were a lot.

It makes me feel old realising that many of you will never have heard of the GLC Smile but, old or not, I wouldn't have missed it for the world. This song has lovely memories for me.

AmethystRaven · 23/03/2019 08:27

Ours sing Proud by MPeople - it's torture going to assembly and not being able to launch into your best Heather Small impression Grin

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 23/03/2019 08:29

We had trendy teachers in my school. We learnt Yellow Submarine and the Long and Winding Road and Ob la di. Then weirdly Horse with no name.
Waterloo Sunset though! The best 60s sing ever.

Deathraystare · 23/03/2019 14:16

One of my all time favourites! (Waterloo Sunset , that is)

motheroftinydragons · 23/03/2019 15:58

Love it! That song was on the tape (yes, tape) playing every day when I worked in my first job. Whenever I hear it I feel nostalgic for 17 year old me and good times!

Thereverenddoctor · 23/03/2019 16:41

A beautiful, beautiful song that always makes me cry for my lost London 20s and 30s.

See also, along the same lines, Days. The Kinks were very special.

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 23/03/2019 18:24

Sluj , I remember the GLC and County Hall .

Your memories are lovely .

I remember singing songs like Mr Postman , On Top of the World and my favourites , Island in the Sun and The Lightning Tree (theme from Follyfoot) in music lessons
