What books would you recommend for a 7 year old. I am looking at chapter books to read at bedtime. So far we have started the Judy Blume fudge series. We also have The Worst Witch series.

What else would you say I should try at this age? Thanks.

My DD loves the Pamela Butchart Izzy books, they were the first books she enjoyed reading on her own. She also loves Tom Gates and Dork Diaries. The Magic Faraway Tree books were her favourite books to be read to her at bedtime though, she cried when the last one finished...Blush

Spudina · 22/03/2019 19:51

DD1 (7)?is obsessed with the Amelia Fang series.

skorpion · 22/03/2019 19:51

My DD adores the 'Daisy and the Trouble with...' books, there's also a brilliant series about a Rabbit and Bear ('Rabbit's Bad Habits is the first one)

Spudina · 22/03/2019 19:52

I don't know why there was a question mark there. I definitely know how old DD1 is!!

Peabody25 · 22/03/2019 20:23

lilqueenie just beware with super fudge, it casts lots of doubts around whether fudge should still believe in Santa!

JoinTheDots · 22/03/2019 21:05

DD (now 8, 7 when she read them) loves the Storey Tree House series and the How to Train Your Dragon series. She also loves the Tom Gates books and the Jiggy McCue books. Mr Gumm was pretty good at that age as well.

GenericHamster · 22/03/2019 21:07

Was just going to say the second fudge book totally spoils Santa!

GenericHamster · 22/03/2019 21:08

Tom Gates, Storey treehouse are the biggest hits here. We’ve also just been reading the totally ridiculous Stinkbomb and Ketchup-Face books which are funny if you don’t mind endless jokes about badgers being dressed up as other animals...

Noel Streatfield?

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 22/03/2019 21:45

Mine loved David Copperfield

Joking

Mr Stink?

DeathMetalMum · 22/03/2019 21:55

Came to mention 13 story tree house series, dd's 6&8 love these. Beast quest series. Dd2 loves anything by Roald Dhal.

Also marking my place for any suggestions !

HawkeyeInConfusion · 22/03/2019 22:26

Another vote for the Pamela Butchart Izzy series. DD loves them and has read them many, many times.

Mmmhmmokdear · 23/03/2019 00:41

Mine enjoyed:

Worst Witch
Narnia series
Swallows & Amazons series
Marge in Charge by Isla Fisher
Just William
Harry Potter

Mmmhmmokdear · 23/03/2019 00:42

Also:

Ballet Shoes
Roald Dahl
Little Princess

dameofdilemma · 23/03/2019 12:01

Some great suggestions.

Dd's favourite for us to read to her is Mrs Pepperpot (I remember loving it many years ago too).
Dd's favourite to read herself is Diary of a Wimpy kid.

implantsandaDyson · 23/03/2019 12:17

My then 7 year old (8 now) loved Princess in Black books, Isadora Moon and a big yes to the Dermot O'Leary Toto the Ninja Cat. She would have been a reluctant and hesitant reader, lacking in confidence until very recently.

LilQueenie · 03/04/2019 17:21

Thank you for all the replies. I'm adding a lot of these suggestions to our reading list. Also a big thank you to the tip off about the fudge book. I have found the chapter and taken a good look so as to be ready to avoid it. We start that book tonight.

We just finished Knitbone Pepper Ghost Dog. I highly recommend it.

Recent hits for my 7yo have been:
The Sheep-pig
Charlotte's Web
Mrs Pepperpot
The 101 Dalmations
Dotty Detective
The Usbourne first graphic novels or Robin Hood and King Arthur.

WeepingWillowWeepingWino · 04/04/2019 09:55

My Naughty Little Sister
Clever Polly and the Stupid Wolf - both of these are short story collections so perfect for bedtime
Agree that Usborne abridged books are very good for this age group
We did the first couple of Narnia ones but fell down with The Horse and His Boy

For independent reading, Tom Gates.
