Help me with words I can’t pronounce

Thisisthelaststraw · 22/03/2019 17:42

Prompted by a few recent threads. I’ve realised there are loads of words I can’t pronouce. I can probably google or something but all together here seems better.

I’ve only in the last number of years figured out hyperbole is not hyper bowl and superfluous is not super-flu-us Blush

Here are ones I still can’t pronounce..

Archetypal
Macabre
Gillet
Hegemony
Chipotle

There’s actually loads more I just can’t think of now.

Norris I think it's

Be-eh-moath

SenecaFalls · 22/03/2019 18:28

Prah-leen.

Roomba · 22/03/2019 18:29

beer moth (without a rhotic R so maybe more like bee-uh-moth for many people)

I say Hegg-e-mon-ee too, it was used a lot in my sociology A level course!

sourdoh · 22/03/2019 18:30

Thanks Seneca .... I've heard pray-leen, pray-line, and am forever mixing up.

ThisIsNotARealAvo · 22/03/2019 18:31

It is helpful to focus on the stressed syllable and then the rest falls into place. I did languages at university and a lecturer there advised someone who couldn't say millennium to focus on the LEN. It worked. And it was 1999 so quite an important word!

Disfordarkchocolate · 22/03/2019 18:33

@PorpentinaScamander blooming spellcheck - hy per bo le with a longish last e

SenecaFalls · 22/03/2019 18:37

sourdoh Plenty of people say pray-leen, but as a former resident of New Orleans, I can assure you that prah-leen is the way to go. An outstanding confectionery, by the way.

Also while I am at it, the nut in a praline is a puh-CAHN. Smile

sourdoh · 22/03/2019 18:42

Oh! We say pee-can 😆

So its a short 'e'

Every days a school day.

Palominoo · 22/03/2019 18:42

Lichen is one that I sometimes forget.

Latte is one that I hear mispronounced the most often.

PorpentinaScamander · 22/03/2019 18:42

Thanks *disfor seems I have been saying superfluous correctly after all. (In my head anyway. Not sure I've ever said it in conversation)

Cel982 · 22/03/2019 18:43

Archetypal - ark-uh-TYPE-uhl
Macabre - mak-AHB
Gillet - ZHEE-lay
Hegemony - heh-GEM-uh-nee
Chipotle - chi-POTE-lay
Behemoth - buh-HEE-muth

Cel982 · 22/03/2019 18:44

Oh, and soo-PER-floo-us!

MargotLovedTom1 · 22/03/2019 18:46

I was a Politics student and it was always 'hegg-eh-munny' in lectures.

3out · 22/03/2019 18:47

Everything Cel982 said!

HotpotLawyer · 22/03/2019 18:54

"Also while I am at it, the nut in a praline is a puh-CAHN"

Not in England it isn't Grin

ApolloandDaphne · 22/03/2019 18:56

I pronounce pecan - pee-can. Is that wrong?

Lichen is like-en

SenecaFalls · 22/03/2019 19:04

Not in England it isn't.

Don't I know it. As a native of the top pecan producing state in the US (Georgia), I do cringe just a little bit whenever the folks on the Geat British Bake-Off decide to make something with my favorite nut. Smile

Frangipane · 22/03/2019 19:09

What? A pecan is a purrcan? First syllable like something a cat does? Surely not!

Frangipane · 22/03/2019 19:12

Although actually, it is only in America that praline contains pecans. In Europe, it is usually hazelnut or almond.

3out · 22/03/2019 19:14

Not purr can, puh cahn.

But I say peecan.

Ilove · 22/03/2019 19:15

I cannot say “preliminary”

My DD cannot do flamingo - they are flimbo’s!!

Frangipane · 22/03/2019 19:16

How does puh-can differ from purr-can?

WhyDidIEatThat · 22/03/2019 19:18

I can’t say the th part of anathema it always comes out like T, anattuhma. Eventually convinced others that’s how it’s supposed to be pronounced even though I know it’s not 😳

Definitelysometime · 22/03/2019 19:20

Yep, chipotle is Chip-Oat-Lay

3out · 22/03/2019 19:23

‘How does puh-can differ from purr-can?’

One has Rs in it, the other one doesn’t. A cat doesn’t puhhh, but it does purrr :)
