They’re just trying to see it and you don’t have to give a reason. They know naff all about life insurance and whether it’s suitable for you. Just say no thanks firmly, repeated as many times as necessary.

Yes, you can get life insurance if you're on benefits. It pays out if you die. Your benefits will have stopped then.

You can just say "no, I don't need to give a reason".

Trying to sell it

You can get life insurance if you're on benefits. I was a single mum on benefits for 3 years and had life insurance.

You don't have to have it if you don't want it, it's completely up to you. But I was even more keen to have it when I was on benefits because I was so financially unstable, it was a relief to think that if anything happened to me my son wouldn't be left with nothing.

Just say "no thank". They're trying to up their sales. They have no knowledge of your personal situation and quite frankly, they don't need to. Don't justify yourself.
If you are in a position to consider life insurance, do your own research. If they're bothering you, contact the Post Office and complain about them overstepping the mark.
