Does anyone know anything about ponds?

I have a garden pond. Two small linked ponds . They were here when I moved in. Had frogs but no fish. We still get frogs but the pond is in desperate need of attention but I have no idea where to start. It's got plants, some iris type things which flower. I don't want to mess it up by going berserk but want to make it a nicer environment.

It's in a walled corner, defunct water feature, bamboo and rocks around. Solid mould type thing.
